BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ousmane Sylla’s fourth goal of the season proved decisive for the No. 1 Clemson Tigers in a 2-0 win on the road against UAB (2-3) on Tuesday night. The Tigers advanced to 6-0 with the victory and Sylla extended his streak of recording at least one point in each match this season. The first half of the match went by relatively harmlessly, with Joseph Andema making three saves against the Blazers attack. Clemson earned four corners to UAB’s one in the first frame, but the teams went to the break scoreless. The second half was an entirely different story, as Sylla came out looking to take over this match. He broke through on the counter attack with speed on two separate occasions, but one of his shots was stopped by the keeper and the other rolled just wide of the right post. The Tigers capitalized on their chances and with the help of a BC red card were able to bring home the win and advance to 5-0-0 on the season. The first half was competitive with each team trading scoring opportunities, but none that were clear cut and provided much challenge to the goalkeepers. In the 34th minute, Tim Strobeck pressured the Boston College goalkeeper, who stumbled trying to clear the ball away and the Swedish sophomore capitalized on the mistake to put the Tigers up 1-0. The second half was going by without much offensive action, until a counter-attack led by Brandon Parrish forced a dangerous tackle from behind that yielded a red card to BC’s CJ Williams. Tim Strobeck and Isaiah Reid tallied their first goals of the season, while freshman goalkeeper Joseph Andema earned a clean sheet in his first career start. Clemson opened the scoring when Ousmane Sylla beat his defender along the goal line, cut inside and found a wide open Ströbeck. The Swedish sophomore calmly took a touch and struck a perfect shot into the top left corner to put the Tigers up in the 15th minute. The first half concluded without many chances to note, but the Tigers added the pressure in the second frame. Sylla continued to dominate on the ball, creating opportunities on several occasions that nearly resulted in goals. CLEMSON, S.C. Ousmane Sylla was named this week's ACC co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. The native of Senegal scored the equalizing and the game-winning goals in Clemson's 3-2 victory over No. 13 Indiana on August 26. Sylla is coming off a brilliant sophomore season in which he played in 22 games, notching five goals and seven assists en route to being named a member of the All-ACC second team. In two games this season, he has been sensational in the counterattack, scoring two goals against Indiana and assisting on Tim Strobeck's goal against USC Upstate. Sylla's elite dribbling and vision has been a major weapon for the Tigers, and he figures to play a crucial role in the team's attack all season long.
