good afternoon, everyone. i m the manager here at the national archives experience. i d like to welcome you all and are good friends at c-span to the special constitution day program. today the national archives sobering the 224th birthday of the united states constitution with an author talk on james madison who was father of the constitution. we are honored today to have as our special guest speaker the preeminent historian and senior editor for national review, richard brookhiser. mr. brookhiser has been writing about politicians, living and dead for most of his life. his first article in high school was a cover story in national review in 1970. when he was 15 years old. he went to work for the magazine full-time in 1977 and has been there ever since. in 1987 he began writing a column for the new york observer. and has written for many of the magazines on the atlantic monthly cosmopolitan cover everything from the fall of communism, the monica lewinsky. for a ....
i think the attention span of people is reduced to it becomes too short if you just have bum bum bum bum bum. you re probably thinking i m being clever and i want to be nice to c-span who had me for an hour. here s the cover of the book. it next, an interview with the president of the charlotte writers club, david rad slip. give me a little bit of the history of the charlotte s writers club. it was founded in 1932, so that makes it one of the largest the oldest arts organizations in north carolina. i don t know if we re the oldest, but one of the oldest. and it started off a little bit more of a reading club, a social club for lovers of literature, and then it s just evolved over time. so it s going to be 90 years old or, no, is that right? 90 years old next year. what is the focus of the club? well, we have a variety of focuses. we want to be a support group for writers, so we offer workshops, contests. we meet once a month during the academic year an ....
the booktv bus is is here as well, and now we re pleased to be joined by another author. her book, intelligence: a novel about the cia, susan hassler is our guest. susan hassler, what s the storyline on your book? guest: well, it s the next big terrorist attack. it hearkens a little bit back to 9/11 in flashbacks, but this is the next terrorist attack and what happens in the cia counterterrorist center before, during and after that attack. host: who is maddie? guest: maddie james is a counterterrorism analyst. she s been in the agency for 15 years, and she s, she s probably been there way too long. [laughter] host: really? why do you say that? guest: well, she s angry, and she her personal life has fallen apart, and her entire life is her job, and she really needs to probably get away from it for a while, but she won t. host: well, susan hasler, you spent 21 years working at the cia in various positions. are you maddie? ....
rationale of war. failures in katrina and economic policy. those are small potatoes. and so we ve dealt with i think a lot of the big issues. and i think there s probably disagreement on this panel in terms of evaluating the presidency. i think this is one of the challenges of studying presidency is in a polarized age. i think many of the people listening, many of the people interacting in conversations kind of read into comments then they read into what they see instantly, their own politics. i m often i find it difficult to have really thoughtful discussions in that environment. we have to. we have to because i think this is a crucial part of our democracy to study, to evaluate, to debate would have been during different presidencies in our history. host: tevi troy come you did work for president bush. guest: i think we ve had a healthy disagreement and i ve been critical at times and the other people prays that sometimes. one thing i say about the book is just so ....
