NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has defended the state s lockdown measures as a record five deaths and 262 locally-acquired cases of Covid-19 were recorded on Thursday.
Panic buying has broken out across Newcastle and the Hunter region after it was announced a snap seven-day lockdown was being imposed in the area due to a fresh outbreak of Covid-19.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian approved a lockdown across the Newcastle and Hunter regions which began at 5pm on Thursday after five school students tested positive.
The local government areas that will be affected are Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens, Cessnock, Dungog, Singleton and Muswellbrook.
The announcement at 11am gave residents six hours to panic buy, and social media was soon peppered with pictures of shoppers in massive queues throughout shopping centres as they raced in to pick up their groceries.

Improving the lifestyle and wellbeing of residents is a key focus area for Lake Macquarie City Council under its $367 million draft Operational Plan for the next financial year.
Council voted tonight to place the draft budget, which outlines 271 actions and $88 million in capital works spanning the entire City on exhibition
The capital works include $46 million spent replacing or upgrading existing assets, and $42 million on adding new assets.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser said that once adopted, actions in the draft budget would inject money into the local economy and promote sustainable growth for the City.
