i think there is something to that. the way i would summarize it would be to say the united states is still the most powerful country in the world, but the margins of our lead are contracting. and what that means in terms of policy is that big problems in the world cannot be solved without the united states, but the united states can no longer be solving them alone or be dictating to others exactly how they get solved. so the premium in these coming years for the united states, i think, as the leading power in the world, is going to be on coalition building and alliance management. when we think about terrorism, think about cyber terrorism and big ideas of the chinese around the world i think the nature of our leadership is changing. it has to change. i ve written a lot about u.s. power. at the end of the day when you add it all up, all the factors of power in the world, compare china, russia, united states, the united states still comes out ahead in almost everything
captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. pelley: good evening. small pox was one of the most frightening diseases the world has known. it killed at least 300 million people in the last century before it was eradicated. so it came as quite a surprise when the u.s. government revealed yesterday that vials of small pox had been forgotten for decades and were just discovered in a cardboard box. the big question now is whether the virus is alive and dr. jon lapook learned more today from the scientist heading the investigation. the vials of small pox are currently being tested in a level 4 high containment laboratory at the cdc in atlanta. that is the agency s most secure facility. you can only gain ent row through a special eye scan. steve monroe runs the division of high consequence pathogens. is it possible the small pox can still grow. it s possible. but we done know for sure if the small porx virus in these samples will still be ab
late afternoon. a heavy police presence here as you can imagine. they have temporarily closed off traffic waiting for the president to arrive. while he is here on the cdc main campus, he will be meeting with leadership of the agency and also with some of the scientists, the disease detectives at the forefront of the coronavirus response. he is trying to draft the ongoing response, which is is a constantly moving target, coronavirus and also at the same time reassuring the american public which obviously has concerns how coronavirus will affect their health and the economy. this meeting at the cdc, though, almost never happened because of a false alarm. take a listen. there was a problem at cdc with somebody that had the virus. it turned out negative. we re seeing if we can do it. the trump administration and the cdc are closely monitoring the situation aboard the grand princess cruise ship which received coronavirus test kits at sea by helicopter. officials became concern
