Letters to the editor for Sunday, March 14: Natural gas, COVID-19 vaccinations, climate change and the Eugene City Council

NewsSportsEntertainmentLifestyleOpinionUSA TODAYObituariesE-EditionLegals LETTERS Letters to the editor for Sunday, March 14: Natural gas, COVID-19 vaccinations, climate change and the Eugene City Council Register-Guard OFRI is vital  The Oregon Legislature should reject a slew of proposed bills that eliminate or de-fund the Oregon Forest Resources Institute. OFRI is the commodity commission for the Oregon forest products sector, one of Oregon’s largest industries, and is virtually identical to more than 20 other grower-supported commodity commissions in Oregon, including the Oregon Blueberry Commission, the Oregon Wine Board and the Oregon Beef Council.  I have seen the benefit of OFRI’s work personally and can say with certainty that without its programming, Oregonian students would be worse off.

Letters to the editor for Wednesday, March 10: Russian sanctions and homelessness in Eugene

Letters to the editor for Wednesday, March 10: Russian sanctions and homelessness in Eugene Register-Guard Setting a better example  The White House has announced new sanctions against Russia over the attempted killing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and yet there appear to be no sanctions coming against Saudi Arabia or Mohammed bin Salman over the killing of Saudi opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi.  The U.S. would achieve much great credibility on the world stage if it exercised a more consistent standard in evaluating the freedom, democracy and human rights of other countries.  In other words, a level playing field.  Why does Cuba’s lack of freedom and democracy merit an 60-year economic embargo, but the death-squad dictatorships of Central America are supported as “fledgling democracies”?  Why do Saudi Arabia’s human rights abuses, genocide against Yemen and utter lack of democracy not merit the scorn that the U.S. he

Steve Molnar, former Roughriders fullback, dies at age 73

(Twitter/Saskatchewan Roughriders) Saturday was a sad day for Saskatchewan Roughriders fans as iconic fullback Steve Molnar died at age 73. Molnar, originally from Saskatoon, played for the CFL team from 1969 to 1978. He backed up the legendary George Reed for the majority of his career, then took over as the starter when Reed retired in 1976. Steve Mazurak, one of Molnar’s teammates starting in 1973, will remember him fondly. “He was one of those guys on the football team (who) when you would look around the room, you would say, ‘OK, whose respect do I really need if I’m going to be welcome in this locker room?’ It would probably be with a guy like Steve Molnar,” Mazurak said in an interview Sunday.
