Letters to the editor for Wednesday, March 10: Russian sanctions and homelessness in Eugene
Register-Guard
Setting a better example
The White House has announced new sanctions against Russia over the attempted killing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and yet there appear to be no sanctions coming against Saudi Arabia or Mohammed bin Salman over the killing of Saudi opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The U.S. would achieve much great credibility on the world stage if it exercised a more consistent standard in evaluating the freedom, democracy and human rights of other countries.  In other words, a level playing field.
Why does Cuba’s lack of freedom and democracy merit an 60-year economic embargo, but the death-squad dictatorships of Central America are supported as “fledgling democracies”?  Why do Saudi Arabia’s human rights abuses, genocide against Yemen and utter lack of democracy not merit the scorn that the U.S. heaps on Iran?
