Tough weekend for Riders alumni as two former greats pass away

By Mitchell Blair Two members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders who spent years with the football team have died. Steve Molnar played from 1969 to 1978 and spent a majority of his career as the backup to the great George Reed.  During his career, he ran for 2,549 yards, including a career-high 822 yards in 1976,  and 20 touchdowns.  He also caught 142 passes for 1,552 yards and two touchdowns.  The Saskatoon native was 73. Bruce Bennett, who is in the Riders Plaza of Honor, played with the green-and-white from 1966 to 1972.  His 35 interceptions are third-most in team history. One of those interceptions was a 112-yard return for a touchdown in a 1972 game against Calgary which to this day is a team record.  Bennett died in Florida from COVID-19 complications at the age of 77.

Community Members Share Experiences at July Protest for Investigation into SPD

Credit Elizabeth Gabriel / KLCC News The City of Springfield held a virtual public forum Thursday evening for community members to share their experience at a Black Lives Matter protest in late July. Most participants spoke against the Springfield Police Department s actions. As part of external investigator Rick Braziel’s research, he listened to 33 community members provide three-minute statements in response to SPD officers hitting, tasing, and dragging Black Unity protesters on July 29 in the Thurston neighborhood. And about one-third of the responders said SPD handled the situation correctly. Thurston resident Steve Molnar said Black Unity’s actions were disruptive. “If it was clear, based on their social media posts, [their plan] was to invade our quiet residential neighborhood and cause as much disruption, and chaos and anarchy as possible,” said Molnar, “what did they expect to happen when they showed up?”
