Weeks after losing nearly everything in forest fire, homeless woman killed trying to cross highway

A New Jersey woman who lost nearly all of her possessions during last month’s forest fire in Ocean County was struck and killed by a car while crossing Route 70 in Brick on Monday, according to police and a local minister.
Kathleen M. Winits, 55, was hit by an eastbound sedan as she crossed near the intersection with Olden Street shortly before 7 p.m, Brick police said.
Winits was headed toward the Brick Motor Inn, where she and her husband were temporarily staying. Witnesses told police she ran into traffic and was not in a crosswalk, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. ....
