it s way too early for this. good morning and welcome to way too early, the show that notes that the former president has never been known for his policy chops. i m jonathan lemire on this tuesday, january 18th. we ll start with the news. the senate will begin voting onnen a pair of voting rights bills today despite strong backing from the white house that will likely fail to pass. the senate will convene this afternoon to begin debating but is not expected to hold a vote today. after debate on the bills begin, senate majority leader chuck schumer will move to end debate. that requires a filibuster-proof 60-vote margin, and that s when republicans are expected to block the bills. senator schumer said he ll put forward a bill on the filibuster change after it s used to block the voting rights legislation. the only path forward on this important issue is to change the rules to bypass the filibuster, and right now there are two democrats who don t want to make ....

the time everything started to come closer into focus about the coordinated effort orchestrated by many republicans to overturn the results of the 2020 election and derail our democracy. and we re going to get to everything that happened this week in just a second. but first, i actually want to rewind a bit further to one of the weirdest moments of the trump administration. take a look. this was june of 2018, the start of hurricane season. donald trump and vice president mike pence visited fema headquarters to be briefed on hurricane preparedness. the first lady, who you see there, was also there seated at the head of the table like she s the co-president or something like that. but believe it or not, that wasn t even the weird part. i want you to watch this. at one point, donald trump takes the water bottle that is in front of him and puts it on the floor, at which point mike pence does literally the exact same thing. it almost looked pavlovian for a moment, a weird, i ....
overcoming opposition and passing voting rights in the senate. these bills help treat the symptoms of the disease, but they do not fully address the disease itself. while i continue to support these bills i will not support separate actions that worsen the underlying disease of division infecting our country. senators kyrsten sinema and joe manchin, another protector of the filibuster, seem to believe when it comes to protecting democracy the cure is worse than the problem. in their minds eliminating the filibuster, a maneuver done many times before to bypass the 60-vote threshold, that that is somehow worse than republican states like texas and georgia making it harder to vote and installing partisans to perhaps put the thumb on the scale in a close election. how big is the threat? consider this last year 19 states enacted 34 laws that restrict voting and alter the vote counting process. hundreds more were introduced. more are coming this year. and threats of viole ....
