The coastal segment of the district stretching from South Chellanam to Nayarambalam has been devastated by floods caused by sea swells and high waves triggered by the spell of heavy rain following a low pressure area build-up in the Lakshadweep sea since early hours of Friday.
The western areas of the Elamkunnappuzha are not as badly affected as the Chellanam panchayat but the situation is grim, said Razia Jamal, panchayat member. She said that Puthuvype, Valappu, Malippuram and Murikkumpadam have been devastated by the floods. ....

With no bids coming in for undertaking repair works on the seawall along some of the most vulnerable segments of the coast, Chellanam coastal protection works are unlikely to meet the March deadline even as residents have expressed apprehensions about facing another rainy season without any protection from sea erosion.
The Irrigation Department had invited bids for repairing and maintaining segments of seawalls along South Chellanam, Gunduparambu, Malakhappadi, Bazaar, Velankanni, Chalakkadavu, Kandakkadavu, Reethalayam, Puthenthode, Kannamaly, Cheriyakadavu, Kattiparambu, Manassery and Saudi. The government had also issued technical sanction for work worth ₹1 crore related to the revamping of seawalls, said T.A. Dalphine and Jinson Veluthamannungal of Paschima K ....

The ₹50-crore project will create over 9,000 direct jobs
The dream of a fishing harbour for traditional fishermen living along the 26-km coastal line between South Chellanam and Fort Kochi as well as those in the coastal villages of Arthunkal, Ottamassery, and Andhakaranazhi was realised on Monday with the inauguration of the Chellanam fishing harbour.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the harbour, the demand for which had been rife for nearly a decade.
P.A. Charles, a traditional fisherman and one among those who gave up their homes and land for the project, said that the opening of the harbour gave hope to the village. ....
