KOCHI: The horrors of Cyclone Ockhi is revisiting Chellanam and the nearby coastal areas, with the roiling sea rushing into houses tossing temporary barricades aside and smashing compound walls. Two persons have sustained injuries after debris from collapsing walls fell on them.
While the people have been demanding a strong sea wall for years, nothing has materialised so far. Water has completely submerged the houses close to the beach. Bazaar is the worst-affected area. I tried to barricade my house against the incursion of seawater. But all efforts came to nought and I was forced to shift to higher grounds with my family, said Jinson Veluthamannungal, a resident of Bazaar in Chellanam panchayat. ....

The coastal segments in Chellanam and Edavannakad are among the worst affected coastal regions in the district in the high waves and sea incursion into residential areas close to the coast.
Around 170 families, all of them depending on fishing as a their means of living, have been affected in the Edavanakkad area where sea incursion has been quite frequent now, said Edvanakkad panchayat vice-president V. K. Iqbal. It is not possible for these people to relocate as they depend mostly on fishing for making a living, he said. ....

With no bids coming in for undertaking repair works on the seawall along some of the most vulnerable segments of the coast, Chellanam coastal protection works are unlikely to meet the March deadline even as residents have expressed apprehensions about facing another rainy season without any protection from sea erosion.
The Irrigation Department had invited bids for repairing and maintaining segments of seawalls along South Chellanam, Gunduparambu, Malakhappadi, Bazaar, Velankanni, Chalakkadavu, Kandakkadavu, Reethalayam, Puthenthode, Kannamaly, Cheriyakadavu, Kattiparambu, Manassery and Saudi. The government had also issued technical sanction for work worth ₹1 crore related to the revamping of seawalls, said T.A. Dalphine and Jinson Veluthamannungal of Paschima K ....
