April 18, 1872: The Herald and Tribune lamented, âA pound of sugar was recently returned to the store at which it was purchase (sic) with a polite note stating that it contained too much sand for table use and of enough for building purposes. Does any Jonesboroâ sugar dealer plead guilty?â The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead in 1872, as it is today. However, it was spelled as both Jonesboro and Jonesboroâ, above, inside the pages of the newspaper. April 18, 1885: The Comet had advice for anyone with coops. âUse a quart of coal tar to half a barrel of water stirred up well, and sprinkle the water over the floors of the coops or against the sides, and it will kill the lice and purify the coop.â ....
ELIZABETHTON â For the second year in a row, it appears the Fat Tire Criterium will be held in Elizabethton rather than its old home of Johnson City. The race directors will appear before the Elizabethton City Council on Thursday to seek approval of this yearâs race. Since 2006, the bicycle competition has been the final stage of the Johnson City Omnium, which has been the premiere cycling event in East Tennessee, with cash prizes of over $13,000. The Fat Tire has always been the final stage of the three-stage Omnium and had been held in Johnson City until 2020, when it was moved to Elizabethton. ....
Nearly 300 homes in Unicoi County could soon have access to fiber optic broadband, which would mean the high-speed internet service would be available to everyone in the county. The Erwin Utilities Authority already provides fiber optic broadband to all of its customers, but there were three areas in Unicoi County serviced by other electric systems. After requests for service in those areas, the utility authority began the process of approval to provide broadband outside its designated coverage area. Much like cable companies, utility companies have boundaries within which their services can be offered. âThereâs a plan in place for all the county (to have broadband) except three pockets and we donât think itâs fair to the residents there,â President and CEO of Erwin Utilities Lee Brown said last week to the Town of Unicoi aldermen meeting. ....
