redding california and we are at the redding library of the public libraries and we are on the second floor of the library in the firesign room. today we re going to be looking at items from our local history collection which is called the bonds collection. so the bonds collection is named after mae bacon box. she moved as a child out to suffolk county in 1871 and she grew up here in el paso and she had a love for history and particularly transportation and early california history so she, most of her life she was collecting items and she did collect books and she ended up getting some of, a portion of her collection of the cabinet to the library and that was the start of the bonds collection. now the bonds collection has grown and we ve outgrown the cabinet and we are now in minicamp and it consists of probably about 5000 items and the collection focuses on early california history, native americans but then particularly the history of suffolk county. so this collectio ....
beyond the turbulent times. i am joined by sharon owens from the writing department. welcome to our meeting and thank you so much for thinking of us and coming to join us today. we are honored to have you here. first let s start off with what is the writers forum? the writers forum is an organization that had early beginning in the early 80s when we discovered that we had several people in our community who were interested in writing and who wanted to meet and network with like-minded folks. we eventually became a larger organization and more formal and when we decided we needed a mission statement, what we decided was that our mission is to promote the craft of writing as an art and as a profession and we felt that covered all the needs our community would have and we have a far-reaching community, we go beyond redding and beyond shasta county. we have people who come from as far away as even southern oregon,sacramento and to the east and west in the foothills ....
continued with my writing stories about my generation of an wildlife so the book is called the game warden s son . being with mike s dad during that year was like having a storybook childhood, i did things most kids wouldn t dream of. when he started out, he was on what you call marine patrol and his duty was patrolling the channel islands in the california channel islands which are fantastic and anywhere from 26 miles across the sea like the song says or clear out in the ocean so i got to go on these excursions or these patrols out into the channel islands and see things that most kids would only dream of, there was oneparticular chapter i wrote about in the book , i call it to the islands where we went out and took it to national park scientists from washington dc out to santa barbara island and the island hadn t been declared by the president franklin roosevelt as a national monument years before and it was their job to turn this island back to its natural state bec ....
