about this morning. finally those i- r-s scammers lighting up your phone are busted. 10news reporter sarah hollenbeck is live in the newsroom. sarah, this was a massive scam impacting thousands of people. yes, at least 15- thousand victims who coughed up more than $300 million bucks to scammers. federal investigators are thrilled to finally have made some arrests in a case we know a lot of you in the tampa bay area were directly impacted by. this morning - 56 people a posing as irs agents and immigration authorities and teling people they either had a deportation warrant or a tax debt. federal investigators tracked the calls to at least 5 call centers in india. but they also found people here in the us including florida - ripping people off with this scam. coming up at 5- 30..i ll introduce you to a woman who gave scammers nearly 100- thousand dollars. this morning, the ntsb will begin investigating what caused a plane carrying republican vice presidential nominee m ....
kropff. and i m ian reitz. it s hands down one of the most annoying things you can imagine: scam calls. this morning many of you are reaching out to us relieved to hear federal investigators are cracking down on some of the worst scam artists in history. 10news reporter sarah hollenbeck is live in the nwsroom. sarah, at one point the better business bureau says they were getting 200 calls a week about this irs scam. yes, and that s just counting the people who actually took the time to report it. this morning investigators are thanking a rip off callers, and helping them make 56 arrests. investigators only wish they could have caught them sooner. at least 15- thousand people forked over $300 million bucks to scammers claiming to be with the irs or immigration enforcement. they targeted mostly older americans and immigrants and threatened them with large fines, lawsuits and jail time if they didn t pay their phony tax it happened to mary van essendelft.a grandmother ....
fun holiday. for example, the creepy clown craze has caught all of our attention. but there are quite a few other costumes that most people would agree should be off-limits this halloween. take a look at this incident from over the weekend. during saturday s wisconsin versus nebraska game in madison, some fans got in trouble after one person showed costume that appeared to be president barack obama with a noose around his neck. this is offensive for obvious reasons, but a lot of people might not realize these costumes at the game immediately conjure up images of racial lynchings committed mostly in the south after the civil war against african americans as a means of intimidation and control. the fans were later seen in clinton and trump masks. they were asked to remove them, but decided to leave the stadium altogether. the fans were within their right to exercise free speech.but the point that we re making here is that just because you can do something, doesn t mean ....
bars this morning after her husband alerted police that his stepson was found dead in a closet at the family s home. police believe his mother veronica was keeping her son locked in a closet for three years. yonathan s siblings told police their mother was using sleeping aids on the boy and locking him in closets, so small he couldn t stretch out his feet. and although dcfs investigated the family six times for possible abuse or neglect and yonatan s risk of abuse at home was gauged as high social workers never opened a case. veronica aguilar, who volunteered at her kids school, apparently convinced everyone nothing was amiss, our cbs affiliate in la reports. investigators reportedly talked to the school nurse, the school doctors, school counselors, the teachers, and lapd investigators, who all said everything here s what i m looking into at 6-30. this story has several of you talking on facebook i m digging through your comments. plus, what our cbs sister station in ....
