kropff. and i'm ian reitz. it's hands down one of the most annoying things you can imagine: scam calls. this morning-- many of you are reaching out to us -- relieved to hear federal investigators are cracking down on some of the worst scam artists in history. 10news reporter sarah hollenbeck is live in the nwsroom. sarah, at one point the better business bureau says they were getting 200 calls a week about this irs scam. yes, and that's just counting the people who actually took the time to report it. this morning-- investigators are thanking a rip off callers, and helping them make 56 arrests. investigators only wish they could have caught them sooner. at least 15- thousand people forked over $300 million bucks to scammers claiming to be with the irs or immigration enforcement. they targeted mostly older americans and immigrants-- and threatened them with large fines, lawsuits and jail time if they didn't pay their phony tax it happened to mary van essendelft...a grandmother who was scammed out of 100-thousand dollars. the fake irs agent told her that her grown son with special needs hadn't paid taxes in a decade--- and if he didn't pay, he'd be thrown in jail. most of the arrests in this scam are in india, but there were some scammers arrested in 8 us states--- including 3 here in florida. here's what i'm digging into at 6--- if you were scammed or you know someone who was, will you be getting your money back now that these scammers have been arrested? a yes vote means a person who is 65 or older, makes less than 20-thousand dollars, and has a house valued at no more than 250- thousand dollars can get a break on their property taxes. once they apply - the tax break is fixed for that home value. so, even if their home value increases those seniors will still get a tax break. this is only for cities and counties that have already adopted the or they have no one eligible for the tax break right now...and only had a handful last year. in pasco - they haven't even adopted the ordinance, so no one there is eligible either. but in hillsborough about 45-hundred seniors could benefit. a vote no would make low income seniors re-apply every year for their tax break and could mean some would be priced out of the exemption if their property value increases. we know it's important to you to understand what you're voting on. we're making it easier to understand what all the amendments mean. you can check out mark's breakdown of all of them up for your vote on w-t-s-p dot com and on the free 10 news app. if you're ready to get your holiday shopping done, you don't have to wait until black friday to score some great deals. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live at westshore plaza in tampa. emerald, some retailers are offering deals as early as next week. yeah, and this has comes to scoring those black friday deals earlier and earlier. for most people, shopping online is so much easier and more convenient than coming here to the mall, waiting in line and fighting the crowds. and starting on november first, amazon will be rolling out some of its black friday deals. this is well ahead of both black friday and cyber monday. and here's think about. if more people are shopping earlier and shopping online, will it be easier to get around the malls on black friday and the rest of the holiday season and should you take advantage of that?
