The boys are back in the ALP as they attempt to force Jodi McKay out of office and hold a ballot that excludes Labor Party members at large (“I won’t go, says McKay, as MP quits over dossier”, May 26). When the stench of corruption from the Obeid years still hangs over Labor in NSW, they have as leader a woman who stood up to the boys in the ALP at the cost of her seat in Parliament. That takes courage as well as ethics. In a time when the number of Liberal and National MPs in NSW are under a cloud regarding allegations of corruption and sexual assault, one may think that a demonstrated cleanskin might be an attractive option. Not for the Labor boys in Macquarie Street and Sussex Street. No wonder they lag in the polls. ....

Bridget McKenzie might have lost her ministerial position, but the Coalition clearly filed away her spreadsheet ready for a rainy day (“Sydney fears being left high and dry in tourism cash splash”, March 12). Now we hear that $1.2 billion is being tossed to Qantas and Virgin on routes to 13 “international” tourist destinations, all but one being marginal and Coalition-held seats. This is the same government that could only manage an additional $25 per week for JobSeekers. They are without shame. ....

Now that Scott Morrison has put on his father cap, could he extend compassion to the Sri Lankan family incarcerated on Christmas Island (“Plea to free family stuck in visa limbo”, February 17) and allow them to return to their life in Biloela?
Rhonda Seymour, Castle Hill
Following the Federal Court’s positive ruling in favour of the Tamil family’s visa application, it was distressing to read that the government is still not legally obliged to release the family from detention on Christmas Island. Unsurprisingly, the Home Affairs Department trotted out the usual weasel words: “At no time has any member of the family been found to be owed protection.” Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do ....

Scott Morrison is now doing his best imitation of King Canute (“PM resists UK push on climate sanctions”, February 11). Canute tried to order back the tide, while Morrison is trying to push back on the inevitability of the rest of the world setting a zero emissions target, and placing sanctions against those who fail to do so. While he rabbits on about “Australia will decide its own climate goals”, the rest of the world will decide how it deals with our recalcitrance. Like Canute, Morrison’s stance is the essence of futility. ....

PM shift towards net zero may be too little, too late

Very much like an iceberg in the Arctic, Scott Morrison is slowly melting to the idea of taking some sort of climate change action (“PM shifts towards net-zero emissions”, February 2), but it has to be targeted, incremental and won’t cost the people who vote for him any money. The trouble with this approach is by the time he does anything, we’re all cooked.
Chris Moe, Bensville
The idea to have zero emissions by almost 30 years from now is the Prime Minister playing politics. It’s a put-off. The Coalition has had the past 10 years to devise a plan and all we’ve got is obfuscation. ....
