In early March 2020, Julee Richards remembers sitting in stunned silence with her co-workers in the breakroom. COVID-19 had just been declared a global pandemic, and panicked shoppers were starting to swarm the Fred Meyer near Tacoma where Richards works as a cashier.
Over the next few weeks, a number of employees quit out of concern for their safety, leaving Richards and those who remained to manage the crowds on their own. “We barely survived through May,” she said. ....

Teachers across the country continue to fail your children. Leaning on unsubstantiated COVID-related fears and exploiting a pandemic for personal and professional gain, teachers still refuse to return to classrooms despite, in some cases, cutting the line for a vaccine.
It s time for parents to speak up in a collective voice to pressure teachers to get back to work or face losing their jobs or their early vaccine access.
Last week, Washington governor Jay Inslee announced teachers would qualify earlier than they were supposed to for vaccine access. In other words, all the talk about equity doesn t extend to the elderly; a young, tech-savvy teacher with easy access to the internet can get a vaccine they don t yet need while seniors struggle to log into the confusing websites to find out where v ....

Teachers are calling in sick to highlight their concerns about returning to in-person learning.
TACOMA - Sixty-one Tacoma teachers called in sick Wednesday to send a message about concerns over in-person learning, but that number is only 15-20 more than usual and the district is moving forward with its plan to bring all kids back to the classroom.
Wednesdays are independent learning days for most students in the Tacoma Public Schools district, so the planned sickout did not have much impact, district spokesman Dan Voelpel said.
The group behind the sickout, Safe Return Tacoma, says that s why they chose Wednesday to take action.  ....

Tacoma teacher group plans sick-out over COVID-19 safety concerns for in-person learning
Allison Needles, The News Tribune
A group of teachers in Tacoma is planning a sick-out Wednesday to draw attention to their demands for a safe return to in-person learning.
A post on Instagram Sunday by a group called Safe Return Tacoma encouraged Tacoma Public Schools employees to request a sick day, set students up with independent work and join in “mini actions” throughout the day.
“By participating in a sick out on an asynchronous late-start Wednesday, we are having minimal negative impact on students while still being able to send a clear message to the district: look how many of your employees don’t feel safe with your hybrid model!” the post stated. ....
