Tigers Claw, Drop Match to No. 11 North Carolina

CLEMSON, S.C. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team (10-8, 1-5 ACC) clawed back in singles play after dropping the doubles point against No. 11 North Carolina (14-5, 6-1 ACC) but was unable to win the match, losing 4-1. The Tar Heels came out of the gates quickly, taking the doubles point with 6-1 victories on Courts 1 and 3. Matt Pitts and Jorge Plans Gonzalez’s match on Court 3 went unfinished at 1-4. The Tigers turned it on in singles play, forcing five courts to three sets. Despite a loss on Court 6, Ryuhei Azuma gutted out a battle with No. 47 Cernoch, winning 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) to bring the score to 2-1 before North Carolina clinched the match with wins on Court 3 and 4.  Up next, the Tigers will travel to take on Miami and No. 17 Florida State. Tigers Fall to No. 15 Duke

CLEMSON, S.C. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team (10-7, 1-4 ACC) forced tiebreakers in all three doubles matches and pushed in doubles but ultimately came up short against No. 15 Duke (12-5, 5-1 ACC) on Friday night, 7-0. Despite the Blue Devils having two ranked doubles pairs, the Tigers played great tennis, pushing every court to a tiebreaker as Courts 1 and 2 ultimately fell to give Duke the doubles point. Trey Stinchcomb and Max Smith were down 5-2 on Court 2 and extended the match to 6-6 before it went unfinished. Duke took its momentum into singles play, winning matches on Courts 5, 3, 6 and 2 before Jorge Plans Gonzalez forced a third set for a battle on Court 2. Despite his best efforts he was unable to secure the victory. Ryuhei Azuma impressed on Court 1, pushing No. 17 Garrett Johns to a 10 point tiebreak, losing a heartbreaker, 13-11 to give the Duke the 7-0 lead.  Up next, the Tigers will host No. 11 North Carolina on Sunday at noon at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facil ....

Tigers Upend Boston College 5-2

WEYMOUTH, MASS. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team (10-6, 1-3 ACC) came out on top Friday night against Boston College (6-5, 0-3 ACC), 5-2. The Tigers and Eagles were evenly matched from the first serve as doubles play went into tiebreakers on every court. Boston College secured the first win on Court 2, 7-6 before clinching the doubles point on Court 1, 7-6 leaving the match on Court 3 unfinished. Nini Dica helped get Clemson back on track in singles play, earning the 6-4, 6-2 win on Court 5 before four Tigers followed his lead. The Eagles were able to regain their lead with a Court 6 victory before Ryuhei Azuma and Spencer Whitaker earned wins on Courts 1 and 3, 6-0, 7-5 and 7-5, 6-1, respectively. Tigers Drop Match to Georgia Tech

CLEMSON, S.C. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team (9-6, 0-3 ACC) competed well against Georgia Tech Wednesday night at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility against Georgia Tech (10-7, 1-2 ACC) but came up short, 4-1. QUOTE The Tigers got out the gates strong in doubles but were unable to secure the win on Court 2, losing 6-2. Spencer Whitaker and Ryuhei Azuma battled from Court 1 against the No. 15 doubles team in the country in Marcus McDaniel/Andres Martin, but narrowly dropped the match 6-4. Matt Pitts and Jorge Plans Gonzalez were up 4-3, but the match went unfinished. M. Pitts continued his steady play by tying things up for the Tigers 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win on Court 4. Georgia Tech didn’t back down though, securing points on Courts 3 and 5 to extend their lead to 3-1. Max Smith battled on Court 6 to push a tiebreak in the second game but would ultimately drop his match, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Tigers Top UNCW Saturday Afternoon

CLEMSON, S.C. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team (9-3) topped the UNCW Seahawks (3-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility to improve their home record to 8-2 and conclude non-conference play. “It was an excellent win for us today,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “Coming into the match, Jorge was out and Ryuhei was limited with an injury, which was definitely a cause for concern against a very good UNCW team. We had to step up and dig deep, which all the boys did. I am incredibly proud of them for the way they competed and played. We need to get healthy as we prepare for the ACC season which kicks off next weekend.
