Rifle. Authorities say when deputies arrived, the man led them on a chase. He fled in a vehicle starting a pursuit. Deputies pursued. The suspect stopped, fired rounds at the deputies. They returned fire. The suspect got back in his vehicle and fled again. He fired additional shots. The suspect then later crashed already the suspect died at the scene. Four deputies were injured. One deputy sustained a head injury and is in critical but stable condition. Another was shot in the leg. Two other officers had injuries to their hands. The san Martin Airport is here. The plane landed here which means they had to tow it northbound, exit the freeway and get back on the other direction for a total distance of 4 1 2 miles. What a drive it turned out to be. The pickup truck towing the plane went at about the pace of a leisurely stroll. When it came time to merge back on the freeway, the chp ran a traffic break and yes, the backup was horrendous. Across the wide lanes of 101 the plane could actually make good time but once on surface streets crews often had to unhook the plane and wiggle it through by hand to get past traffic signs, mailboxes and fences sometimes with inches to spare.
