the san martin airport is here. the plane landed here which means they had to tow it northbound, exit the freeway and get back on the other direction for a total distance of 4 1/2 miles. what a drive it turned out to be. the pickup truck towing the plane went at about the pace of a leisurely stroll. when it came time to merge back on the freeway, the chp ran a traffic break and yes, the backup was horrendous. across the wide lanes of 101 the plane could actually make good time but once on surface streets crews often had to unhook the plane and wiggle it through by hand to get past traffic signs, mailboxes and fences sometimes with inches to spare. what do you think of this? >> it don't bother me. i done know why they didn't tow it across the field. >> reporter: the slow motion plane with emergency vehicles through the santa clara countryside was surreal. ever see anything like this? >> no. not at all. it's crazy. this is amazing. >> reporter: the pilot was okay. no one on the ground was injured. there was no damage anywhere and the whole thing start to finish took about two hours. >> i think this pilot did from what i can tell an outstanding job, exceptional to be able to kpix5's andrea nakano. >> reporter: the wine country is bracing itself for the cold weather tonight and it's hoping that it stays out of the 20s and workers will be out on frost patrol hoping that they can save their crop. >> it's really the perfect storm. >> reporter: first the wine country experienced unseasonably warm temperatures causing vinyls to bud out two to three weeks earlier than normal. >> the vines and all the trees and flowers think hey, it's springtime. it's time to wake up. >> reporter: especially the chardonnay vinyls where you can already see these leaves and tiny little clusters of fruit, but now here comes a frost where temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-20s overnight. >> this is one time you can't sleep in because it really could be devastating. >> reporter: starting at midnight vineyard workers will be out on patrol trying to limit the damage. tom davies says one night of frost can damage the entire crop. he's already experienced it more than a decade ago. >> back in 2006 we lost about 20 acres of fruit. that was a big hit and for a small family winery, that hurt. >> reporter: once temperatures reach freezing levels when machines will be turned on. >> he doing the air moving, it keep -- keeping the air moving, it keeps that cold air and potentially ice from forming on this little bud. >> reporter: but if temperatures fall below 28 degrees, there's not much that can be done to save the budding crop. >> once it gets so cold we're really at the whims of mother nature. >> reporter: and the cabernet vines should be okay since they typically bud a little later than the chardonnay, but it is a wait and see approach here in wine country looking to see how cold it gets tonight and this week. live in sonoma, andrea nakano, kpix5. a
