live from cnn center, this cnn newsroom. with robyn curnow. thank you so much for joining me this hour. great to have you along. and we actually begin the show in afghanistan and a chilly warning that came from the cia, and it came too late to stop a u.s. air strike that killed ten afghan civilians last month. according to three sources, the intelligence agency warned there were likely civilians in the area and possibly children just seconds before the missile found its target. the military hit the toyota following a suicide bombing that killed 13 u.s. troops and scores of afghans racing to evacuate at the kabul airport. but the pentagon now admits no one in the car was linked to isis-k, calling the air strike a mistake. seven of those killed in the attack were children. nic robertson has been speaking some of the relatives who lost siblings, sons and daughters in the strike. he has a look at their heartache from kabul. a lot of children. reporter: this is the ....

but it was too late. that missile killed ten innocent people. the pentagon initially said an isis-k suspect was in the car and carrying explosives but yesterday defense officials admitted there was no terrorist threat and the strike actually killed an afghan aide worker bringing water home for his family. also killed two other adults and seven children. let s get to cnn senior national correspondent alex marquardt with me here in washington. what do we know about the cia warning and the sequence of events here? this story just gets worse and worse. this was already a story about how the intelligence had failed by tracking this person who they thought was an isis member, and clearly isn t. now, this is a story also about bad communication. the cia knew that there were civilians in the area. children in the area near this car. and gave this warning. but it was too late. this coming seconds before that held-fire missile was dropped from that drone, and tore through ahmad ....
knew the military intended to pull the trilgger. it raises all sorts of questions about how an order like this is carried out. but what it really does highlight the fact the u.s. was frantically trying to rout out isis attackers who they believed were going to carry out an imminent attack. the pentagon emphasized all of this is against the backdrop of a dynamic situation in which they were frantically trying to find isis members who wanted to carry out an attack. remember this was a few days after that attack that left 170 afghans and service members dead. one of the 60 pieces of intelligence that general mckenzie said yesterday at the pentagon they had was that a white toyota corolla would be involved in the next attack. mr. ahmadi, an aid worker, that s the car he drove, and he drove it from an area that they believed was associated with isis past his office where they loaded what intelligence officials believed were explosives into the car. turned out to be water. an ....
