Hello again, everyone. Thank you so much for joining me. I am fredricka whitfield. Happening now, the Nations Capital on high alert. Substantial Police Presence and Crowd Control measures in places, demonstrators in support of The Mob which stormed the capitol January 6th gathered in Washington Today for a rally. It was just nine months ago we saw these terrifying scenes unfolding. Hundreds of people scaling walls, breaking windows, Storming Hallways of the capitol, yelling to find Nancy Pelosi and to hang mike pence. Lawmakers and the Vice President ran to safety. Capitol police horribly outnumbered and targeted by The Mob. One officer died. More than 100 were hurt. Some seriously. Three other officers later died by suicide. Today, the scene quite different. Barriers, fencing surrounding the capitol. Hundreds of officers in position should demonstrations grow violent. We have a team of correspondents covering every angle of this. Lets begin with Shimon Prokupecz in the midst of the protest on the mall. Shimon . Reporter yeah. Certainly at this point it doesnt seem the Capitol Police, washington, d. C. Police and other police that are here need to worry about being outnumbered. There are more Police Officers present around the capitol. Youll see behind us, these are Capitol Police officers in riot gear. There are more officers just behind the fence here. Clearly outnumbering the protesters that have come to the rally. This is the police talking to us about something. There are certainly more officers here. I have to tell you something, fred. You can feel the tension from the police. Theyre taking nothing for granted. Theyre not chancing anything. They stopped someone with a knife, arrested the person, removed him. They have been going through the crowd, sometimes looking for specific people. Certainly the police are not taking chances. There are more officers on the perimeter as well. Police blanketing the area, theyre concerned, dont want a repeat of January 6th. This is supposed to end in a half hour or so. The Police Chief i spoke to him around 11 30, expected this to wrap around this time. It is still going. It has been peaceful. People have been speaking at a podium, of course, complaining about the fact that people were arrested on January 6th, how they have been treated. So far, very important to note, it has been peaceful and for now, things are okay. Well see when it wraps up what happens. Police are concerned when crowds start to leave. Thank you so much. Lets check in with Pete Muntean at another area of the grounds there of the mall on washington. What are you seeing . Reporter fredricka, 25 police agencies are involved securing the area. You can see Capitol Police that lined up behind me in riot gear. Thats exactly what protesters would face, if anything potentially popped up. Through the bike rack, then through the line of Capitol Police. Another one around the pond of the capitol in the frontage, then a six foot high fence around the capitol perimeter. Capitol police responsible for patrolling this area. Once you get beyond this, it is metropolitan Washington Police Department responsibility and they have a lot of practice here with dealing with first amendment activities. The head of the Capitol Police department said yesterday he was primarily concerned about Counter Protests popping up here. Three Counter Protests were scheduled. One of them had a history of violence. Thats the biggest concern from head of Capitol Police. Well see if that transpires. So far, not much in the way of tension yet. Pete muntean, Shimon Prokupecz, thanks to you both. Appreciate it. Lets talk more about this. Joining me, Cnn Law Enforcement Analyst and former Secret Service agency. Jonathan, good to see you. Hey, fred, how are you this afternoon . Very good. Based on what youve seen there and images, hearing from pete and shimon, what are your impressions whats happening on the mall . Actually what were seeing is really the dual responsibility that Law Enforcement has during these events. First and foremost, theyre out there to protect individual rights and constitutional right to free speech, so making sure they can gather and protest as necessary as allowable under the constitution. They have to be prepared in the event a protest goes into nonviolent direct action or civil unrest, they have to be able to quickly react, have Contingency Plans in place and were seeing that. Were seeing the protesters going on, seems like a nonevent there. Doing what they intended to do today. You see the preparedness. Thats critically important now, the Show Of Force is out there. The reason being is the threat that we saw on January 6th is unmitigated. What we saw on that day still hasnt been addressed. Thats why youre seeing such a show of Force Today that Law Enforcement is sending out a signal that they will not toll late civil unrest that was fueled January 6th any more. And how do you suppose officers that are out there today are feeling, particularly if they were in the throws of the chaos there on January 6th. How are they processing all thats transpiring today. Listen, these officers are professionals. I commend them for the work they do. It is not just being there today, they were out there on the frontlines on january 7th. Theyve been out there every single day doing their job. They should be commended for that. The difference is that the intelligence that has been gathered in advance of the event has been disseminated to rank and file. Everybody is on the same Operating Platform now with fully understanding what the Threat Environment is and how they respond. The preparations for today were significant and will serve as a model going forward for any type of critical incident. At the same time how insulting might it be for officers to hear the former president who has been expressing sympathy for those who took part in the insurrection and encouraging those that have come out today in support of those who have been charged, facing charges, and the former president s words, says the people shouldnt be persecuted. How is this sitting with officers out there today . Listen, it is discouraging. The reality of Law Enforcement is that officers across the country are called names every single day, theyre used to it. They have thick skin. Would they like to see a different result, like to see the former commander in chief Support Law and order like he stated he did in the past . His actions are showing something different today. Those Law Enforcement officers again, theyre professionals. Theyre out there to do a duty. Even if someone is yelling at them, calling them names, theyre going to protect that individuals right to do so while protecting civil order throughout the national capital region. Really true professionals. Jonathan, thanks so much. Good to see you. Thanks, fred. Now to a growing humanitarian crisis on the southern border, u. S. Customs and Border Control Closing port of entry in Del Rio, texas as more than 14,000 Migrants Huddle under a bridge there. Traffic, Auto Traffic on the bridge is being rerouted. The mayor calling it a nuclear Bomb Alarm and declaring a local emergency. Cnn Correspondent Rosa flores is in Del Rio with more. Reporter fred, the federal government announcing they are ramping up resources to deal with the humanitarian crisis, this after local officials have been calling out the federal government, asking them to do more about whats going on just beyond the border wall. This is where more than 14,000 migrants are waiting to be processed by u. S. Immigration authorities. You look beyond the Law Enforcement vehicles, thats where more than 14,000 people are waiting. Theyre waiting in squalor. From the air, you can see these are men, women, children, pregnant women, infants that are waiting to be processed. Dhs announcing that they are in the next 72 hours increasing the number of Expulsion And Removal flights to haiti to try to deter haitians from coming here to Del Rio. A couple other actions that theyre taking according to the six Point Strategy that was released by Dhs Today is theyre also increasing in the next 24 to 48 hours the number of agents and officers that will be responding to the situation, increasing it by 400 and say that they will be adding more officers if thats needed. Theyre also getting i. C. E. And u. S. Coast guard involved to transport individuals to other ports of entry, other Processing Facilities so they could be processed. They say they recently moved at least 2,000 migrants to other Processing Facilities. All of this is in response to this influx of migrants. The other thing they say theyre doing is theyre going to increase the humanitarian action which is something local officials are complaining about. According to dhs, what the federal government was providing here was water, towels, and toilets. And local officials were calling for more. The local mayor issuing a declaration, Disaster Declaration Yesterday saying he was trying to get access to more resources to help the response here. So fred, this is what local officials have been asking for, greater response by the federal government to make sure something is being done about the thousands of people that have been waiting under a bridge to be processed by u. S. Immigration authorities. Fred . Rosa flores, thank you so much. Coming up. Averaging 2,000 deaths a day first time since march according to latest data from johns hopkins. Covid hospitalizations dipped slightly in recent days, experts say Unvaccinated people continue to drive the pandemic as more than a quarter of eligible americans have yet to get a single shot. And vaccination numbers are down again as the fda considers third shots for the most vulnerable of americans. Cnns Nadia Romero has the latest. Reporter after a long day of contentious debate, advisers to the Food And Drug administration friday rejected the request to add a Booster Dose of the covid19 to everyone 16 and older, instead, voting to recommend Emergency Use for 65 and older and those at high risk. We have unanimous 18 out of 18 who voted yes. Reporter one Health Expert says the debate is distraction to the real problem, the Unvaccinated. 2,000 people dying a day currently, 100,000 hospitalized. So the focus should be on the 67 Million people who have not been vaccinated. The other ones driving the pandemic, not those already fully vaccinated. Sometimes our Loved Ones leave us quickly like a thief in the night. Reporter one leader of World Health Organization calling for global moratorium on Booster Shots, saying that needs to happen until 10 of every country in the world is vaccinated. Fred . Thank you so much for that. Joining me to discuss, dr. Tyson bell, infectious Disease Expert and Assistant Professor of pulmonary and critical Care Medicine at the university of virginia. Dr. Bell, good to see you. Thank you for having me on, fredricka. How should the u. S. Balance concerns from World Health Organization when it comes to Booster Shots . Well, i certainly think our first priority has to be getting first doses in people. Thats how we prevent hospitals being overwhelmed and can deliver high quality care. I think that there are a clear group of people at higher risk, those older in age, immuno compromised. This is what i have seen the last couple weeks on service, only had a handful of patients that had Breakthrough Infections, all are immuno compromised or older in age. I think the Fda Decision hit an overlap between the group at highest risk of Breakthrough Infections that lead to severe disease, also making sure were not taking our eye off the goal of prioritizing people getting first and second doses to make sure we can use the vaccines the best way we can to turn the tide on the pandemic. The fda is encouraging everyone get that first dose as is. The West Virginia governor, listen to him. The only thing i have in my arsenal that will make this get better is for you to get vaccinated. Thats all ive got. Were going to run to the fire and get vaccinated right now or were going to pile the Body Bags up until we reach a point in time to where we have enough people that have natural immunities and enough people that are vaccinated. Graphic talk. Body bags. Is that the message that will move the needle for those Unvaccinated to encourage them to get one. Well, i do think it is important to be very honest about what Health Care workers are seeing. Unfortunately weve seen scenes like this in italy, New York, brazil, other places that had overwhelming surges and places had to call in refrigerated trucks because they couldnt keep up with people that were dying unfortunately. The only sad part is that now this is largely preventable through vaccination. There are some people that call it fear mongering, but i will take the other argument and say it is not fear mongering if hospitals and people in icus are fearful that more patients will come in with covid19. I think this is stark reality and that encourages people to get vaccinated, i think thats the appropriate message. And every hospital has said more than 90 of the people coming in who are covid positive are Unvaccinated. Underscoring what you say. It is preventable before it costs you your life. Recent data from American Academy Of Pediatrics shows Coronavirus Infections are up 240 among children since july. That number is extraordinary and frightening. Kids now account for 29 of all cases reported nationwide. What is your message to parents who have kids who are under 12 who are not eligible to get a vaccine but certainly want to keep their kids safe. As a parent of two young children, i can attest that parents are anxious about keeping our children safe and trying to get Emergency Authorization as quickly as possible to get children vaccinated. I think it is important to recognize that were not completely powerless right now even though children under the age of 12 are not eligible for vaccine, there are still many things we can do to protect them, namely vaccinating adults that are around children. Cdc shows states with highest rates of vaccination compared to lowest rates of vaccination, children were four times more likely to be hospitalized in states with lowest rates of vaccination. So vaccines have a powerful effect on protecting children, even if they arent direct recipient of the vaccine. Thats the first thing. When you combine that with mitigation to prevent virus spreading in the first place, that adds another layer to it. These are things like indoor masking, social distancing, making sure you are avoiding large, crowded spaces, these are all things we can do to try to protect children as we await, anxiously await authorization from the fda. We can anticipate data from pfizer will be released in the next three to four weeks according to officials. Hopefully that means well have Emergency Use authorization at least in that group 5 to 11 by late october, early november. And let me ask you about the issue of Rationing Care that so many hospitals across the country are having to do. A hospital in montana so overwhelmed they were forced to rags care earlier in the week. We heard these stories. This is a Nightmare Scenario and theres a Burnout Factor among the personnel as well, and the fact that theyve run out of beds. What are your thoughts about where we are going as hospitals are Rationing Care . This is also very sad to see. My institution like many others, early on in the pandemic last year put together our own crisis of care standards. Luckily, we didnt have to use them. We are not approaching that now. I didnt expect we would be here at this point, and largely again reflects undervaccination in areas experiencing high capacity in the icu. You mention open beds. One thing thats important to get across, an open bed doesnt mean we can safely Take Care of a patient. Icus Take Care of patients that range from those who are not as critically ill, may just need intensive monitoring, otherwise are okay, all the way to most severe covid19 patients on multiple infusions, multiple Life Support machines. An icu at capacity or 90 or above, you might have nurses who can safely Take Care of patients if not so critically ill. If you have high acute ee, that nurse can only safely Take Care of one patient. When at capacity limit, you may not have the ability to safely flex Staffing Ratios or safely Take Care of all patients. So while we focus on ventilators, i think the most scarce resource is nursing care. And we have national shortages of critical infusion drugs to make sure patients are safe in the icu. It is very unfortunate but again this is largely preventable at this point and we need to encourage vaccination. All right. Doctor tyson bell, thank you so much. Be well. Thank you. Coming up next. Millionaire Mogul Robert Derst was found guilty of first Degree Murder for the killing of Susan Berman more than 20 years ago. He was the subject of a Hit Hbo Crime Documentary The Jinx where he made this bombshell admission. Killed them all, of course. Cnn Correspondent Jean Casarez has more. This was a highly unusual verdict because Robert Derst was not in the courtroom. He is in isolation because he was exposed to covid. The person that drives him to court contracted covid19. Because of that, he couldnt be in the courtroom. There was a big issue because a defendant has a right to be in the courtroom when the verdict is read in his criminal trial, so they looked at California Case law and the judge determined there are exceptions to that and there was one here because juror 12, the foreperson about to go on vacation next week, they would have to wait until the following week to read the verdict. They could lose the verdict. The judge read it. Now, this trial involved nine female jurors, three male jurors. They deliberated for a little over seven hours which isnt very long at all. The trial began march of last year. Covid hit. It was interrupted. It was brought back again may of this year with the same jury. This trial was obviously the charges were in regard to Susan Berman in california, but it was three Murder Trials in one in a sense because there were so many witnesses that focused in on kathy durst, his first Wifes Disappearance in 1982 here in New York city, and then durst was never charged but he was paranoid he was going to be charged. He fled to galveston, texas, donned a wig, became a mute woman, nobody knew where he was until he killed a man in galveston. He said self defense, a jury believed that in galveston. But when he found out the case was going to be reopened against kathy durst, The Jury has now conclusively determined Beyond A Reasonable Doubt he went to california not to spend christmas with his good friend Susan Berman but to murder her. He was convicted of first Degree Murder, elimination of a witness, and also lying in wait. All because you dont have to prove motive, theory was he thought that susan was about to talk to authorities because it is believed she knew that he had murdered kathy durst. He has never been charged in that case. Life without possibility of parole. Theres no Wiggle Room because of special circumstances. Sentencing will be october 18th. He said he was relieved that the military, pentagon said it was a mistake. He said we knew my brother and the children were innocent civilians. This makes it clear to everyone, theyre not terrorists. He said that made him happy. He had a really fundamental question. When the vehicle loaded with Water Bottles which was a daily event was coming into a narrow driveway, narrow Back Alleys in the Neighborhood And Turn for any vehicle is quite tight to get in there, every day we were told that children would come outside and help guide the father, drive the car, maneuver it in, at a tight angle. What the children would love to do is to get in the vehicle along with the father. This was their time of fun. He was Coming Home from a days work, could have a bit of fun with him in the car. Thats the moment the missile struck. From the family perspective, theyre saying it would have been clear to a Drone Operator there were children at the scene. And this was a civilian neighborhood. Every house, you open the door to another house, children come out. From the family perspective, thats a big unanswered question. Possibly what were hearing from the cia would shed light on this. What the family would like to see is thorough investigation is found to be failing in duties or operation standards, they should be charged in court. The family want to see justice done for anyone that was sort of in breach of operational standards or made other errors. Nic robertson in kabul. Thank you so much. Well be right back. Los Angeles County will require proof of vaccination for customers and employees at bars and nightclubs in a few weeks. Similar rule is in effect in New York where an explosive confrontation broke out thursday. Can you believe that . It all started when the hostess at Carmines Restaurant asked three women for vaccine cards. Youve seen protests against masks, right . Now in Georgia Teachers and students are demonstrating in support of Mask Mandates. Our next guest helped organize the demonstrations. Matthew Body Professor at university of north georgia, heads the Georgia Conference of american association of university professors. Doctor, so good to see you. Thanks so much. You organized these demonstrations for Mask Mandates and vaccines on so many campuses. How have you been able to do that and who has been involved . Well, we have a great network of Aaup Chapter leaders, people that stepped up that wanted to be point persons on campus. I custody them could they do it, they certainly said yes so they could organize speakers, rallies for the week long which i dont think has been done before. We have a lot of help around the state. Thats what we wanted was statewide message to the University System. Georgia colleges and universities, the hands are kind of tied on campus, right, on this issue, they have to follow guidance from usg, University System of georgia that represents 26 institutions. So how would you like to see these Campus President s handle this . Well, many of my colleagues want local president s to have autonomy over the campus. Georgia tech to decide for themselves if they want a Mask Mandate. I would also like a mandate for all 26 schools like last year the entire year. Board of regents that oversees the system could do that tomorrow. What is happening to professors that try to take matters into their own hands, try to encourage mask wearing in classrooms. We have some people who threaten to take classrooms online if a Hospital Bed Level gets too high. We have a policy you cant ask about Vaccination Status of students. Our hands are tied in many ways. What we can rely upon is data and emotional stories. People telling their own students about their children that cant be vaccinated, that have to go into schools, dont want to take it home. I personally tried every day with different piece of data or story to students to get mask wearing up. I think i have it up a couple of percentage points. About 50 when we i think the confidence really, the persuasion really can be effective, but certainly a Mask Mandate would be better. Have there been repercussions for professors who advocated for virtual learning because theyre concerned about the lack of vaccinations or even masks being worn . In terms of a virtual education, yes, some professors called for that, and couple decided they would do it themselves when the university said. Oh, wow. We just lost that signal. Suggesting that there could be progressive discipline about this to the faculty members. We havent had any pushback from administrations about the protests for Mask Mandates.
