How a one-two punch of snow and freezing cold created suburban sidewalk debacle

Updated 3/1/2021 6:33 AM
February s storms and arctic temperatures pitched suburban homeowners, particularly those without snowblowers, into a primitive struggle against the elements to clear sidewalks.
The continued onslaught of heavy, back-straining snow was hard enough to tackle. When a deep freeze solidified it, many people surrendered their shovels in defeat.

The result left sidewalks covered with snowdrifts in neighborhoods and along busy streets. Some pedestrians could be seen walking on busy roads rather than wading through sidewalk snow, a risky strategy at best.
Is there a better way to keep sidewalks clean when weather makes it challenging?
That s a tough one, experts said. A focus on plowing streets rather than sidewalks in the suburbs and a patchwork of policies regarding who s responsible for shoveling allow situations like the February sidewalk debacle to occur. ....

In Transit: This could be the year electric vehicles win over consumers, experts say

Updated 2/22/2021 2:40 PM
It doesn t feel like February without the swagger, tire-kicking and glitz of the Chicago Auto Show. The COVID-19 pandemic has swallowed the annual event, although organizers hope for a reset later this year.
But that won t stop our annual preview of hot cars and auto trends.

One major gear shift is the new spate of electric vehicles coming out in 2021, Consumer Guide Automotive Publisher Tom Appel said. They re very mainstream, mid-price, approachable vehicles. Unlike other electric vehicles before them, there are fewer compromises.
Although electric vehicles comprise less than 10% of new cars sold in the U.S., I think we are, right now, sitting on the precipice of electric acceptance, said Appel, a Palatine resident. There are more electric vehicles than customers (currently). That s not going to last very long. ....

In Transit: With fewer cars on the roads in 2020, why did more people die in crashes?

Updated 2/18/2021 4:10 PM
In a year when thousands hunkered down at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people killed in traffic crashes spiked by 15.6% in Illinois.
And despite fewer vehicle trips, fatal crashes rose by 13%, the Illinois Department of Transportation reports.

Why is that?
Generally speaking, when there is less traffic, there is a temptation to exceed the posted speed limit, Illinois State Police Deputy Sgt. Delila Garcia said, adding that the agency could not speculate on the 2020 numbers specifically. The Illinois State Police is asking the motoring public to fight the temptation.
The state isn t alone. Across the U.S., miles traveled by vehicles dropped by 14.5% in the first nine months of 2020 compared to 2019, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports. But fatal crashes rose 4.6% nationwide January through September. ....

Face masks are mandated on planes.
COVID-19 vaccination passports could be coming.

And in a rare bipartisan clampdown, President Joe Biden has retained a rule from former President Donald Trump s tenure requiring international travelers to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before boarding flights to America.
It s a moving target, but here s the latest on flying under the new administration.
On Jan. 21, Biden ordered mask wearing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on airplanes and in airports. ....
