SB3: Ohio House won't vote on bill easing low-level drug penalties

Cincinnati Enquirer
COLUMBUS – A bipartisan Ohio criminal justice bill that would reclassify low-level drug possession felonies as misdemeanors will die without a final vote in the House this week.
House Speaker Bob Cupp, R-Lima, does not plan to bring Senate Bill 3 up for a final floor vote, a spokeswoman confirmed Monday.
The House plans to meet on Tuesday for what could be the last time during this two-year session. Any bills that don t get final approval will die and must restart the legislative process next year.
The bill s supporters, including Republican state senators, had been encouraging the Ohio House GOP, which controls the chamber, to hold a vote. The bill, which diverts offenders to treatment instead of prison, has stalled in the House after clearing a committee last week with bipartisan support. ....

COVID-19 Protesters Gather Outside Ohio GOP Senate Leader's Home, Seeking Veto Override

-
Protesters gathered outside GOP Senate President Larry Obhof s personal home Sunday seeking to pressure him to override a gubernatorial veto of legislation to weaken the health department.
The crowd at Obhof s was a conservative potpourri. Judi Phelps, who wore bright pink snowpants with a pistol holstered at her leg, said she organized the protest. Dec 22, 2020
The Ohio House and Senate passed S.B. 310, the state’s 2021 capital budget late last week, and the bill includes $3.45 million for a number of projects in Ashtabula County.
“I am overjoyed with the capital funds that will be allocated for Ashtabula County by the passage of SB 310,” said State Rep. John Patterson (D-Jefferson), in a statement announcing the projects.
The single largest amount of money, $850,000, will pay for marina improvements in Conneaut, according to the bill. Recently, Conneaut Port Authority Chairman George Peterson described a new transient marina facility to Conneaut City Council.
The Ashtabula County Metroparks will receive $750,000 from the bill, divided up among three projects. The largest amount of money will go to the Pymatuning Valley Greenway Trail, according to the bill. The money will be used to move the trail project forward, said Metroparks Office Administrator Antoinette Green. ....

Ohio Senate Passes Stand Your Ground Bill but Will Gov. DeWine Sign It?

Ohio lawmakers have approved legislation giving gun owners more latitude to fire in self-defense.
The Ohio Senate has given final approval to a controversial ‘Stand your ground” bill that would do away with the “duty to retreat” before using a gun in self-defense.
A few Republicans voted no on the House change to the bill making it easier for someone to fire a gun in self-defense. One was term limited Sen. Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering), who said the bill does not do anything to decrease gun violence or send the proper message.
“It’s time to put the anger and hatred that seems to be consuming our country aside. And I think we can do a heck of a lot better than having people pack their guns when they are going out for an evening stroll, Lehner said.  ....
