AROUND HASTINGS: St. Johns County farmers start harvesting potatoes

AROUND HASTINGS: St. Johns County farmers start harvesting potatoes
Nancy Quatrano
Some of the farmers in the Hastings/Spuds/Elkton agricultural area are currently harvesting their potato crops a bit earlier than usual due to good crop growth and industry demand.
A good number of the farms grow LaChipper potatoes. They are white-skinned and do well with our winter growing conditions. Sebagos are a traditional Florida variety that’s getting increasingly more difficult to find, but longtime residents and growers appreciate the unique flavor and texture of this white-skinned potato.
In this region, Irish potatoes were the first varieties to do well and those include the Gold Rush, Red Pontiac, and more recently, the Yukon Gold. One of the most successful yellow varieties however is the Satina that was introduced around 2002. People enjoy the yellow flesh and yellow skin of the potato. Only the Yukon Gold outsells the Satina in Florida. ....

Idaho Makes History, Becomes the First State to Ban Critical Race Theory – RedState

As reported by The Idaho Statesman, the Senate approved the measure Monday, 27-8.
It had made its way through the House last Thursday to the tune of 57-12.
Per the wording of the bill, it “[establishes] provisions regarding dignity and nondiscrimination in public education” and “[prohibits] the expenditure of moneys for certain purposes.”
Prior to reaching the Senate for a vote, the measure was opened for public testimony before the Senate Education Committee.
Earlier this week, the Statesman noted an uprising:
With backpacks still on and posters in hand, dozens of high school and college students arrived in front of the Idaho Capitol Monday afternoon to protest a bill against “critical race theory” that was already set to pass. ....

St. Johns County author culls photographs, stories for Hastings book

In the front of an old building on Main Street in Hastings is a historical marker telling visitors a short story of the little town in southern St. Johns County.
Behind the sign is a large coquina building that opened in 1924 and once housed the town s kindergarten through high school, and then the town s city hall. Now, in a small section of the building, it is home to a county library branch.
For Greg Leonard, author of Hastings: Florida s Potato Capital, the town behind the sign is what his book is about.
The sign gives you this kind of a glimpse about Hastings, Leonard said. But if you really want to know what s behind that story, this book will tell you a lot more about what was going on in this special little town. ....

St. Johns County looks to preserve Hastings, Florida's Potato Capital

Around the turn of the 20th century, Hastings began to blossom as an agricultural center and quickly developed into a bustling community.
People traveled from out of town to buy clothes at Carlisle s dress shop, and men gathered at the local drug store.
“You d get your Cherry Coke; your freshly made hamburgers. You d know everybody down there, said Greg Leonard, whose family has ties to the area and who recently wrote a book on Hastings history.
There was a time when it was a prosperous and booming town in St. Johns County, he said.
There s such a rich history associated with that area, Leonard said. ....

Sweet potatoes are the secret powerhouse

Sweet potatoes are a favorite side dish, especially during the holidays.  Did you know that this common vegetable is a nutritional powerhouse?  The Center for Science in the Public Interest gave the sweet potato a high ranking for nutrition among vegetables.  Sweet potatoes are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, potassium, and beta carotene.  Beta carotene, an antioxidant and precursor to vitamin A, gives sweet potatoes their orange pigment.  Sweet potatoes are naturally low in sodium.
The orange sweet potato is the most popular variety in the United States, particularly in the south.  However, some varieties of sweet potatoes are white, red, pink, or purple.  The varieties with white or yellow flesh are less sweet and moist than the red, pink, and orange varieties.    ....
