DIGHTON On Oct. 14 Virginia Silvia will turn 99. But now at age 98, she s already the oldest person living in Dighton. So on June 28 her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the town got a head start on wishing her a happy birthday with a special award, the Boston Post Cane. Silvia, who still lives in her own home, seemed unfazed by the accolades, which included a certificate of recognition from the selectmen and her name s inclusion on the town s Post Cane recipients plaque. It was also the birth year of longtime Kittery resident Malcolm Foss, the town’s 23rd recipient of the prestigious Boston Post Cane honor. On Wednesday night, Foss, his loved ones and town leaders gathered for an intimate ceremony at the Kittery Historical & Naval Museum to honor the 103-year-old Foss, whose birthday is Sept. 5. As part of the Missouri Compromise, Maine entered the union as the 23rd state in March 1820. “They say I’m half as old as the state of Maine,” Foss said after his reception. ....
Boston Post Cane tradition dates back to 1909 Gardner News ASHBURNHAM The town’s oldest resident was recently honored by the Council on Aging. Rachael Bush Whitney, 100, who once served in the Army and has lived in the community since 1955, was presented with a Boston Post Cane certificate on Monday, April 26. The cane tradition began in 1909 when the publisher of the former Boston Post newspaper, Edwin Grozier, designed 700 walking sticks with heads made of 14-carat gold and each engraved with the name of a town in New England, with the request that they be given to each community’s oldest resident. ....
