It is going to be hard to find ping or no ping. you are sort of in the dark literally looking for it. those pings all important as they try to pinpoint where those boxes might be. don? michael, when we last spoke you said the planes haven t taken off yet and the weather was great. it appears to be beautiful behind you. is it cooperating with searchers today? it is actually. there s a little wind out there in the search area. here it s warming up. classic sort of perth autumn day. out there, it s a little windy and cloudy, could be rain, as well. we heard one plane firing up here. the chinese planes that go out, as well, we should point out go out from perth airport which is miles away and they are probably already up and out there. there will be a dozen planes in all out there searching, looking for debris. interestingly a lot of other boats. the one that is towing the ping locater is pretty much on his own in that tight search area. the rest are way further west, ....

Will sink. stick around, mike. i want to bring in jeff wise, author of the science of your mind and danger. the former inspector general of the transportation and lieutenant colonel michael kay, a former adviser to the ministry of defense. david souci, author of why planes crash. jim till mon ocean search specialist rob mechanical. michael kay, first to you. you are about 70% convinced we are in the right area. why not 100%. i think it is usually positive we have four pings but we have to remember there are constraints with the ping locater. it measures signal strength. it doesn t geo locate. that means there are a number of things that can affect the signal strength. we already talked about the batteries and know they could be weak. but the range f the pinger locater is on the outer limits ....

Pings are still echoing, still going. yeah, that is right, i mean, this is the dawn of day 34 in this search. and those pingers are meant to last about 30 days. so obviously, time running out very quickly in terms of getting more pings. what i guess they re trying to do, anderson, in the same way you use cell towers to try to narrow down where a cell phone might be by triangulation. that is what they re trying to do here, they have four pings now. if they get more they can try to narrow it down even further. that ping locater, it is not directional, so when they get a ping, they can t say, oh, there it is. it just helps them narrow down the search area. what they re trying to do while they can still get the pings is try to narrow it down so they can send down the underwater submersible, the bluefin, which then maps the bottom of the ocean floor and really is ....

Out there, as well. you mentioned the word optimism. the air chief marshal angus houston, a man not given to hyperbole, and when he said yesterday the two pings in addition to the ones last saturday have given him optimism they would find the wreckage, it s telling he would use those words. he is an extra cautious guy. it is really quite something. they re out there again today, of course the focus on the australian ship that is towing that u.s. navy ping locater, looking for more pings crucially so they can narrow it down even further. michael, have they given any more sense today, this morning about how long they re going to continue to just try to listen for those pings using that towing locater before they actually start going under water? because we know time is running out, we don t even know if the ....

Able to draw back and say hey, this was the speed it was traveling and therefore this was the altitude it was at. a lot of interesting things will happen just even before we pick up the black boxes and even before actual wreckage is sighted. so that is kind of an interesting way of looking at it. and as you were speaking we showed yet another map which kind of put them on a time line, all the different search areas that officials have looked over for the past month. this is day 33. it has taken many different nations and coordination, the u.s. sending its towed ping locater to the australian vessel. before we get to the black box which could tell us what happened and caused the flight to end in the indian ocean, already how might what we ve seen change in the aviation industry? that is a great question. i think you know, we re going to have to discover more on what got the airplane to this point. ....
