They are all boston strong and we salute them. Im anderson cooper. Good night. I hope you were with us during the last hour and you were inspired as watching adrianne hasletdavis story. She is truly boston strong. One thing she wanted to get across to everyone watching is something her grandmother said to her as a kid it is okay to not be okay sometimes. But adrien is doing okay. And she has a long road ahead of her as do many of the survivors but we will root for her along the way. If you are just joining us, we expect a News Conference any moment from Australian Authorities on the search for flight 370. It is 11 00 a. M. In the search area. The newly refined and somewhat
smaller search area. You see it in the red near the top of the screen. The gray is former search areas. The question right now is will it change yet again when Angus Houston, whos coordinating the search effort, steps to the make phone in perth. Will he make bigger news. We will find out shortly and we expect the Pre
expire, so you ve got to say, this is our best guess now. their best guess is a remote area more than twice the size of california. good morning. these are all the aircraft flying today. the australians take over the search. and soon after the australian ship ocean shield lowers its pinger locater into the water, pings are detected. clearly this is a most promising lead. it was wow again. it was miraculous. they had just put the towed pinger locater into the water. i was convinced, this is it. they ve got the answer. it s a matter of days. a robotic submarine scours the 329 square mile area where the pings were heard. it s painstakingly slow work. then two months later a massive setback in the search for malaysia airlines flight 370.
they wasn t sure what it was. another ship went to the area and found a seat. so, certainly, eyes on does help. anderson? how long does it take to get out to the area by ship and how long do the ships stay out there for? the search we were on was a search and rescue vessel. we were basically dropping off a pinger locater to one of the larger ships. the larger ships can cope with these conditions far better. they can stay out on site which, of course, is vital so that they have as many daylight hours as possible. with a spotlight they can work through the nights as well. smaller boats are resupplying them, taking the much-needed equipment to be able to get under the water and see and hear what s down there. the captain of the ship i was on was nervous. he said he had a moral dilemma. he had a responsibility to those
larger ships that s able to stay out at sea the entire time. they just about managed to do that. the expert who was supposed to jump across between ships didn t in the end because the ships were banging together and it was simply too dangerous. they also tried to get the inflatable boat across which is needed to operate this pinger locater. that failed as well. so we know they ve headed out again on monday to try and carry out that mission. the largest ships are doing the bulk of the work here. we know the u.s. has two ships out there at the moment. helicopters on board. it s a real international effort. you ve got russia france australia, malaysia singapore, to name a few, with a lot of assets in this search. unless the weather significantly improves all the best equipment in the world really has some serious limitations, anderson? yeah. appreciate the update paula. paula hancocks. some very difficult condition ss.
behind a wave. and then you wouldn t see it again. it is very challenging. one of the crew members did spot something. they called it in. then another larger boat came and picked up a seat from the aircraft showing just how important it is that they do have plenty of eyes on the surface of the water. but, of course it s under the water that they really want to get to see. we know the u.s. is deploying sonar at this point. divers are struggling. zero visibility we re being told. as you can see with these conditions we saw on sunday just how choppy this sea is. you don t expect it to be calm. it is the middle of the java sea. but this is the middle of the monsoon season and officials here are telling me the weather is by far, the biggest obstacle in this operation. anderson? i understand the ship you were on relatively small from the other craft out there, you had to turn around after completing only half of the mission. reporter: that s right. the mission was to transfer a pinger lo
