The analysts have been refining this information for four weeks. we re now down to two converging 240 kilometer tracks. that is extremely refined, considering the size of the area. 130,000 square miles we have been looking at previously. so that is good news. what i would say, though, i still don t think that the revelation moment is going to come from the ping locater. i think it s going to be from the p- s, the p-3s. still an aviation story. at the moment, they re the assets that can cover the most area. now, the question i would ask is, is that if we do have those two converging tracks why haven t the aircraft been on top of the location, being able to see something. and because for me, you don t get one without the other. you don t get the black boxes without some sort of indication of debris. so all i can say to that, why has it taken 28 days to crunch numbers and data. we re going to go into that. stand by if you will, richard quest. last quick comment? i was going to say, do ....
explain what that is. autonomous underwater vehicle. side scan sonar or still camera. what it is designed to do it operates under the water and takes a map of the ocean bed. it s really looking for debris, small, large debris of what should be airplane parts. the towed ping locater ears listening for the ping and blue fin is like eyes? that s correct. it s making a sonar image or using a still camera to actually find debris or hopefully a black box. where is malaysia in all of this? we are working with australia. is malaysia in on it at this point? this is one of the great international efforts. there are oso many countries involved. we are getting excellent cooperation from all of those countries. it really shows that the international community can come together in a crisis like this. pull together and do what is best for quite a few grieving families. and once again, it s like, i at this point my tip my hat to the u.s. navy ....
For the search for malaysian airlines flight 370 is in the area. a british vessel to look for pings from the black boxes. we re also waiting for a news conference from the man who is now coordinating the search efforts in australia. so joining me now thrive talk about this, cnn aviation analyst and veteran private pilot miles o brien. david gallo, leader of the search for air france flight 447. and cnn s safety analyst daft s david soucie an author of why planes crash. let me start with you here. just before the break i spoke to commander marks of the seventh fleet. he basically told me they re just trying to get lucky here. right now we re searching off the sides of the ship with the towed ping locater. just trying to get lucky. didn t inspire much confidence in me i have to say. is that really the best they can do right now? i know what he means. ....
They are ready to deploy potentially in an area that is of significance. and michael weigh-in. i m sorry, but every time i hear the search changes location, i get frustrated. i don t get optimistic. you and a lot of people get frustrated. but we ve got to caution the optimism here. the reason we ve got to do that is because as chad myers did some brilliant analysis the other day, it will take 3,000 years to cover an area of 130,000 square miles with a ping locater. what we re doing is we re vesting all of our egg sboos this silver bullet, the ocean shield, the ping locator looking for those gps pings off the black boxes. the reality is and we have to be open about this, is that we re going to find likely going to find, the aircraft through some sort of debris trail. and we can t keep investing our hopes and our dreams in finding this through the gps pings. the gps pings will run out in ten days or around ten days. ....
Effectively. and with all due respect to the r.a.f. and the brits and everybody else, the malaysians keep saying they re going to expand this, and that they re going to ask the americans to provide even more of its stellar equipment. well, i think will makes a critical point we need to zone in on in terms of the ocean shield. yes, it is a unique and advanced technology, but it has serious constraints. and that constraint, it can only see a mile around where its ping locater is. and when you look at the size of the area, you know, it s not designed to go straight into find the needle. we use the p-3s, the p-8s, to get over the area, scan the area and find that haystack. and then you bring the ships in. we re kind of subverting that process at the moment, because we don t know where to look. so we shouldn t be putting all our eggs in the one basket of the technology piece. we also know the human eye is absolutely critical to this investigation, as well. but let s go back at the inter ....
