[laughter] people were accessing for some blessings, so. let s get right to our first revvie. of 2023.est political headline i ll share a few of my own nominees to get us started. my first top news story,
the fight will go on for many months. the fate of gaza s nearly 2 million refugees is growing bleaker by the day. 40% of gaza s population is now at risk of famine. that s according to the u.n., which says daily life has been reduced to a struggle for food and water for so many civilians. and with winter setting in, those conditions will only get also learned today that an israeli american citizen believed to have been taken hostage was in fact killed on october 7th. the kibbutz where judy weinstein lived and worked confirming the 70-year-old teacher and poet was murdered along with her husband during the attack. their bodies still being held in gaza. aaron gilchrist is traveling with president biden in the u.s. virgin islands with more on this. josh, let s start with you. what more can you tell us about this israeli american citizen? reporter: well, as you mentioned, she is 70 years old, and she had been believed to have been held hostage in the gaza strip. but now we have
ineligible to appear on that state s 2024 republican primary ballot, because he incited an insurrection at the u.s. capitol on january 6th. almost three years ago. with her ruling, they ve now become the second state to say that trump is ineligible to appear on the 2024 republican primary ballot. the bell s decision comes a week after the colorado supreme court issued a similar ruling. that ruling is now being appealed by both sides, the nation s highest court. the nine justices of the supreme court are being petition to settle the issue of whether trump is barred from serving as president under section three of the 14th amendment, which bars any candidate from holding the office who engaged in insurrection. in her ruling tonight, the secretary of state wrote, and i quote, i have little trouble concluding that the events of january 6th, 2021 were an insurrection within the meaning of section three of the 14th amendment. to the record establishes that mr. trump over the course
presidential actions on january 6th, and is disqualifiedro holding office under section iii of theh amendment. importantly eedd was the ticking countdown clock, giving any party, not just donald trump, until january 4th to appeal to the supreme court and saying if anyone asks the supreme court to review this case, then donald trump s name stays on the ballot until the supreme court weighs in. well, no surprise, the disgraced, twice impeached, four times indicted ex-president made a lot of noise after the ruling came out whining and bloviating and promising to, quote, swiftly file an appeal to the supreme court. but then a funny thing happened. while trump and his lawye were working on that swift appeal look who beat him to t proverbial punch, the colorado republican party, who filed their owneal urging the justices to take up the case and d while mr. trump is expected toil his own petition in the coming days, the move by the colorado republican party has a, quote, practical i
