In the Trump Classified document case, they will meet this week. The procommittee took a firstever federal indictment of a former president. One who happens to be seeking to return to that office in 2024. Trump was one of the few republican president ial hopefuls not to appear at a Motorcycle Themed Campaign Event in iowa this weekend. He will be jumping into the race officially this week, along with former new Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The number of republicans running continues to grow, even as the rnc adopts rules aimed at narrowing access to the primary debate stage. Meantime on the democratic side, President Biden this weekend is signing a bipartisan deal to raise the debt ceiling as he celebrates strong tears on the economic front. 339,000 jobs added in may alone. The president hoping these achievements can strengthen the president s case for four more years in office. Were covering it all, with Senate Budget chairman Sheldon Whitehouse and Congressional Black Caucus member, Congressman Troy Cardy of louisiana. And later, as we said earlier this weekend, it marks the seven years since the death of the legendary muhammad ole. Collie ali is going to be with us, talking about how she is carrying on her fathers legacy of activism in the fight for Social Justice. A federal grand jury in the case, they will meet this weekend in washington. Prosecutors from Special Counsel david smith will be bringing them in with evidence and witnesses in the case theyve heard for months. But activity in the case had slowed down in recent weeks. Trump maintains that the investigation is politically motivated. Your thoughts on what this all could mean . I think the press prosecutor is a very talented individual. And hes going through all the right steps. Hes going through what i would call the final cleanup steps in an investigation, of going around, giving everybody up to maralago. Making sure hes pinned down. Their testimony closes off any escape hatches, and i think the recent revelation that there is a tape of trump talking about a document that he knows to be classified is a very significant turn of events because it blows up his defense, either that he declassified all the documents when he was president , so its a big deal . Or i thought they were declassified. Between the Debt Ceiling Deal and the job known as exceeding expectations, democrats would appear to be operating from a place of strength right now. How do you expect that to impact priorities across both chambers, going into the upcoming Election Year . I think if you look at the ceremony that joe biden had, he did not take a big victory lap. I think he understands that in the cage match of washington d. C. Politics, he gave the republicans one heck of a thrashing. But in the world of policy and the families, and of people going to work, there was nothing in that bill that was very good for anybody in america. But what he did do was he keyed us up for 2024 quite well by showing that the republicans were extremists, by putting the entire House Republican caucus on record. Voting for a bill that would cost 700,000 jobs and promote a recession, and being unwilling to change one crooked tax loophole in the tax code. They defended all of the junk in the tax code. So politically, it was a very smart move. I think it teens him up to move forward towards 24 pretty effectively. Talking about moving toward 24 effectively, between now and 2025, at least three sitting Senate Democrats will retire. Ben cardin, of delaware. And Diane Feinstein in california. And with those pending retirements, democrats have a rare trifecta of open seats in blue states, even more unusual is the fact that a black woman is a top contender in each field. Vice president harris was the last woman to serve in the senate. The Democratic Party is seeing new voters. With the future of the party in mind, should changing the fbi priority for the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee . The key priority is to make sure we win those three races, we ought to win them, they are good blue democrat states. But you can never be too sure, you want to make sure youve got the strongest candidate for the state. So i wish them all well, it looks like there is going to be a black woman member of congress right now. As the likely nominee for the Democratic Party in delaware, which is terrific. Theres a strong primary in california of really good candidates. And the field in maryland seems to still be shaping up. I think were going to have very strong candidates, all of them. It looks like at least one will be a black female candidate. Senator, we are approaching in three weeks the anniversary of the u. S. Supreme courts decision in the Dobbs Versus Jackson organization. That decision overturning roe v. Wade last june and with that the constitutional right to abortion in america. In the aftermath some reproductive rights activists and members of congress have called for a reform of the Supreme Court. I agree with that, expansion of its members to offset the current conservative majority, members for justices in february. Hank johnson reintroduce a bill to strengthen oversight of justices activities. Joe you see a link between the courts decision on dobbs, and the scandals motivating this Reform Portion . Which has generated support even among senate republicans. Sure. The bill that hank johnson and i have done is the most powerful and comprehensive judicial reform bill out there, and i think the conduct and behavior of the Supreme Court justices makes the case for it every single day. They connection to any Ethics Scandal and dobbs is pretty clear, if you go back to the story of Reverend Schenck and his Supreme Court plan to a wine and dine selected Supreme Court justices. Republican appointees, to get them to be bold and strong with respect to fighting Abortion Rights and in fact, it was an early decision called the hobby lobby case that related to contraception coverage. Reverend schenck, then a republican operatives, seems to have gotten advance notice of it, either directly or indirectly. So the millions of dollars that were spent whining and dining the judges, the efforts to influence them secretly, the leak of the decision. There is a big mess of Ethics Problems that surrounds these trajectory of the Dobbs Decision and the decision itself. All right. Thank you for being with us tonight, senator sheldon. Lets start with this, President Biden signed the Debt Ceiling Bill yesterday, avoiding a default. You spent some time on the house floor, urging the republican colleagues to pass a deal. Are you happy with what congress in the white house settled on . First of all, thank you for the opportunity to be here with you. Just like we did three times under the trump administration, just like it was done three times the previous administrations. Without fanfare, without political jockeying. Unfortunately, we had to do all of that. And the American People were held hostage. The American People, with the full faith and credit of the United States was challenged for nothing more than pure politics. Having said that, shalanda young, the budget director. The president of the United States and his team did an incredible job of saving what could have been a catastrophic default on our country. Protecting americans, protecting our environmental gains, protecting the bipartisan infrastructure bill. Protecting medicaid, medicare, protecting environmental gains that were made in places where weve had historic deficiencies with environmental justice. So this is as much a win as you can possibly get in an exercise that should never ever have happened. Now that the Debt Ceiling Drama sorted out, speaking as a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, what are your goals for the remainder of this legislative session . We have lots of work to do. And we still have to go through the appropriations process, even though the process has been settled. We avoided a catastrophic default, but we still have to go and dive into the numbers. We need to make sure that we minimize the pain that this senseless exercise may cause americans in the country. Also making sure that we continue to fight for Voting Rights. In 2023, he wouldnt think wed still be having this discussion. We will continue to fight to make sure African Americans are safe to drive freely without fear of being a brew used. We will continue to fight for the george floyd policing act. We will continue to fight to make sure people have access to the ballot box without any fear or danger, or without having to wonder if their votes are going to be properly counted. We are going to fight to get additional legislative seats in my home state of louisiana, where the numbers suggested we should have had to African Americans in the state. I am the sole democrat, and we deserve to. Clearly there should be two seats in louisiana and that is the case. Switching gears on thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris announced the Biden Administration is developing a rule to tackle racial bias in home evaluation. It is part of an ongoing effort by the white house to make homeownership easier for African Americans and other communities of color. It has come at a time when the administration has reported that elevating the Vice President s profile as a way to show americans of leadership above the 2024 election. Are you encouraged by these efforts . Im encouraged by all of the work for Vice President. I think shes done an incredible job, i think there are incidents out there that cause people to view her efforts in a lens that is unfair. But i will tell you that our Vice President has done a phenomenal job. She has been a great part of america. And these are efforts that she is taking to address those disparities in our community. We know the disproportionately, racism in Financial Systems are real. We see them every day, and the prophesy that our Vice President is tackling yet another substantive issue to address the racism, the financial disparities and the need for our community to have strong leadership for a black female who happens to be an outstanding Vice President. This is something well very proud of. When you look at the data, black Home Ownership is actually gone down since the 63 margin on washington. And its a very important, what shes announced this week. Before i let you go, i noticed a report this week that your neighboring state of mississippi still has 32 School Districts under federal desegregation orders, according to the department of justice. Doj Officials Say they are still fighting the Supreme Court ruling. Well some of your colleagues are complaining about socalled critical race theory, which isnt even taught in elementary or high schools. Yet they continue to turn a blind eye to real life evidence of discrimination. Reaction, congressman . Its ridiculous. Its absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. The reality is that here we are, nearly 70 years to the day of brown versus education. Brown versus the board of education. Nearly seven, eight years to the day. We see ourselves in a situation where we are still dealing with a level of discrimination and hate speech. Across our country we see it, and 32 cases where discrimination is still an issue. Unacceptable while we attempt to turn the clock back on history, and things that we know to have happened, like slavery. You may not like the effects of having to seal your forefathers did, but you have to recognize that it happened. And we need to make sure that it never happens again. Here we are nearly 70 years later, brown v. Board of education something that was a Historic Landmark Case in mississippi. Yet we are still battling to enforce it. And you accept how i feel, sir . Embarrassed, disrespected, and outraged. We look at the level of faith that are maga republicans often try to pass forward. Republicans and democrats alike, if you love our country, you love fairness and justice. He should be equally as angered by the practices that we see. And we should all act out, thats what we will do to make sure the Congressional Black Caucus is front and center, providing resources and listening to support of people all over the world, to be part of the change we desperately need in america. The right wing forces who push for legislation at the political level have also started using boycotts to push their agenda. In the private sector as well. A new study finds that three out of four non lgbtq americans believe companies should publicly support the community, according to the gay rights organization, glad. Lets bring in my Political Panel former democratic senator doug jones from alabama and former republican congressman, dave jolly of florida. Doug, lets start with the exclusive nbc reporting that a federal grand jury in the Trump Classified document case will be meeting this week after a brief hiatus. The investigation by the Special Counsel could lead to a federal indictment for the former president , who is already been indicted in new york for falsifying business documents. And is being probed in georgia for alleged election interference. How do you think this documents case ranks among the many legal problems facing the former president and the warmer president ial candidate right now . You know, rev, its hard to rank these cases. There are so many of them out there, and all of them are very serious. I think where this one ranks is where we expect something to go, relatively soon. Its hard to read the tea leaves with any prosecutor, much less federal prosecutors. And youve been a federal prosecutor, thats why wonder opinion. Yeah. It seems to me that we are get into the end of the road in this. A decision is being made very soon, weve seen a lot of evidence coming out this past week, at least reports of evidence of tape recordings, and lawyer notes, and things like that. It seems to me, and i could be totally wrong on this, that this hiatus is a chance for the prosecutors and investigators to pull everything together for one final push. Again, thats pure speculation on my part. I have no inside information. But i think that were kind of at the end of the road. Jack smith knows that the clock is ticking on this, as weve discussed many times. I wanted the insight a former prosecutor, former senator doug jones on that. David, most republican president ial candidates were in iowa this weekend for senator johnny ernsts fundraiser. A major early event in every campaign cycle. One of the moments getting a lot of attention is from Florida Governor Ron Desantiss speech. Take a listen to this. As president i recognize that the woke mind virus represents a war on the truth. So we will wage a war on the woke. We will fight the woke in education, we will fight the woke in the corporations. We will fight the woke in the halls of congress. We will never ever surrender to the woke mob. We will make woke ideology left to the dustbin of history, its gone. Some eagle eyed observers on twitter, lets put it there, noted that seven times, seven Times Desantis mentioned woke in less than 20 seconds. What you make of this speech . Did anyone else stand out to you . Yeah. So rare, very importantly, based on his tenure as governor, every time we hear him talking about a war on woke, and use that term seven times, we should replace word woke with black or brown or gay, lgbtq, migrant. Replace it with something else. Because what the war on woke and florida has done is further marginalized the black and brown communities, the lgbt community, and shame the allies of those communities. So qualitatively, i think we have to start to condemn rhonda s use of wokeism and this war on woke he wants to run on. But look, in republican politics, you heard the cheers. And donald trump ushered in the platforming and mainstreaming of division, and hate, and marginalization. He took the baton from him and in republican politics, donald trump pulls all the numbers. Obviously the momentum probably is with ron desantis. If i was a republican president ial candidate today, id rather be ron desantis than donald trump. I think we have reason to be concerned about the threat that ron desantis poses to United States. Dog, lets turn to a new ruling that came down on friday. It says the tennessean is first in the nation to have a law that this restricts limits on drag shows. It has been declared unconstitutional. The Trump Appointed federal judge says the law is both, quote, unconstitutionally vague and substantially over broad. And it encourages discriminatory enforcement. What is your reaction, and what impact could this ruling have another antidrag bills passing in several states . First and foremost, i think it was an absolutely correct ruling. I think that judge did a wonderful job of parsing the evidence and the facts and the law, and following the precedent. Talking about the fact that certainly, legally obscene material and things like that can be banned. But this is very subjective. This is conduct, this is First Amendment and free speech. Plus the law is very vague, and when the law is very ivanka, specially dealing with such a topic as drag shows, it means selective enforcement and discrimination that way. The court did a really good job at setting a good example for other courts. Because we are going to see this, rev. Were going to see these lawsuits, were already seeing cases coming out of other states where theyre going to have more lawsuits, and more lawsuits. Im hoping that people will look at this and set this precedent. I think its absolutely the right way to go. David, this week former Vice President mike pence and former new Jersey Governor Chris Christie are expected to officially announce their president ial bids. Both candidates are wellknown national names. But at the moment, they dont have much proper support. Could either of them gain enough support in a republican primary, and how would you see them doing it . The odds arent in their favor. But every candidate other than trump is counting on trump to tumble somehow. Trump will wound himself, either through a conviction or through additional indictments, or a possible conviction. Perhaps the loss of his liberty i think these other candidates other than trump and desantis are getting it because they see the fundamental weakness, or at least the ceiling right now to rhonda santas. He cant seem to push over 25, he cant seem to take away very loyal trump voters. A candidate that i want to see in this race is Chris Christie. He will have a very clarifying impact. He likely has no viability to win the nomination, but we know he will go right at donald trump. He will likely go right at wrong desantis, on many of the lies and fictions that desantis is put out there about the free state of florida. We all remember what Chris Christie did to marco rubio. Showing how weak he was as a political figure, and as a leader. I suspect Chris Christie has a couple candidates in the republican primary in his sights this week. Seven years ago this weekend, we lost the greatest, the greatest of alltimes. Muhammad ali, one of the most recognizable athletes of the last century, a boxer who transcended the sport through his activism and after decades long battle with parkinsons disease. How he took on the most feared fighters of the socalled golden age of heavyweight boxing, even beating them out of the gate or avenging losses that led to him becoming a World Champion three times. But among elise greatest fights was the one thrust on him by the vietnam draft, the vietnam war draft. His to serve in that war, in accordance with his muslim faith, his being stripped of His World Title in 1967 convention, criminal conviction, at that. That was overturned by the Supreme Court four years later. Now seven years after his passing, his daughter, columbia, is fighting her own fight to free wrongfully convicted and to reduce the number of non violent offenders, filling americas presence. The unspeakable cruelty that goes on in our Prison System must come to an end. Ive been so blessed to team up with who was my sons hero, jason form, and the innocence project, have ive been joe comey been calling muhammad ali, and ive been working feverishly, crossing the country, going to local governors, the ace, visiting folks in prison, getting the facts firsthand, and doing everything that i can to leverage my fathers spirit, his energy, his passion, toward helping some really innocent people who dont belong in jail. Two people in particular that i wanted to talk about today. One of them being billy allen, who was sentenced to life, he is on death row. Billy, an extraordinarily innocent man, who went into jail at 19 years old. Hes been there for 25 years. We get the wrong president , his name is billy allen, hes at the very, very top of that list. And just like many of these folks, theres absolutely no evidence. Theres not forensic evidence, theres no one placing really at the scene of the crime. And this is a man whose accomplishments outside of prison are actually equally as amazing inside of prison. And they are imprisoned, billy allen, the other, and you are fighting on that point. Youve taken on the reduced millions of non offenders in our prisons, many of whom incarcerated due to drugs and he wrote in a march editorial for the Louisville Court journal, quote, and you wrote in that, at some point, we have to admit that the war on drugs has just been a war on people, a war on us. Thats the end of your quote. You fight with the passion, you know, knew me when i had an afro before james brown got me to redo my hair. I have a picture, there it is. A picture of him and you have the same passion of your father. Im sure he would be doing that and i was telling simone earlier on this show, your father brought me in this building with james brown, 30 rock on the plaza when i was in my twenties. Really . Said not that night on the tomorrow show, tom sater had said, the world needs to know about this young reverend, hes been out there for years. Your father did it, thats why i want you on my show as often as you can, because this issue is right. Bless you, ill. I mean, we have to get deep into these issues. Lets talk about bail reform, lets talk about tonight, theres probably over 500,000 people in prison simply, before theyre even convicted of a crime, because they cannot afford bail. You know, i also come from juvenile law center, ive been a coordinator for seven years. Do we not even know, as a nation, that we are in presenting children in Adult Population presents . Ive recently gotten to the Moon Population with governor chris kerr and his wife, and mckay. I want to applaud them. You know, do we know the fact that women now are the largest growing segment of people who are in prison .
