Council says no to bars in convenience stores Posted on March 3, 2021 by oshawaexpress in CITY, NEWS By Courtney Bachar/The Oshawa Express/LJI Reporter Oshawa City Council is fighting to ensure a bar doesn’t end up at 711 stores. Council is sending a letter of objection to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission opposing the application by the 711 corporation for a licence to allow for the addition of a bar at 61 of its convenience stores across the province, including one in Oshawa at 245 Wentworth St. W. “I can tell you I’ve been around a long time and I’ve never seen an application for a licence with such a potential for negativity in a local community,” says Councillor Brian Nicholson. “What we’re talking about is placing a bar inside a convenience store and that people will be sitting and drinking right next to your children.” ....
Oshawa in mourning after death of former long-time councillor Posted on February 8, 2021 by oshawaexpress in CITY, NEWS Former long-time Oshawa City Councillor John Aker has died. Aker passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4 surrounded by friends and family at the age of 78 years. “Aker dedicated his life to his family, and the service of others within the City of Oshawa, and the Region of Durham,” states his obituary. Aker was first elected to Oshawa City Council as an Alderman in 1973 serving as both city and regional councillor from 1974 to 1997 when he stepped away to join the Ontario Municipal Board. A 10-year member of the board, Aker returned to local government in 2010 where he served two more terms as a city and regional councillor. ....
City takes on BIA duties after disbanding group Posted on February 1, 2021 by oshawaexpress in CITY, NEWS By Courtney Bachar/The Oshawa Express/LJI Reporter The Downtown Oshawa BIA is officially gone. BIA Board Chair Ivano Labricciosa says it’s unfortunate and is disappointed in how things rolled out. However, he says he hopes the city will be able to pick up and continue to carry out the services and functions previously performed by the organization. “Our worry is that the city picks up the functions and supports the businesses successfully, and continues with a plan for the downtown as we were envisioning.” ....
