welcome to our viewers in the united states and all around the world. it is thursday, january 27th. i m john berman with brianna keilar. just a few hours from now, the fight officially begins to fill the next vacancy on the nation s highest court. president biden and stephen breyer expected to officially announce breyer s retirement at the white house. obviously this has major historical and political implications. so here s a look at the supreme court vacancy by the numbers. 108 of the 115 u.s. justices have been white men. the other seven, two black men and five women. it s been 28 years since bill clinton and breyer showed off their running legs in short-shorts. just another reason to love the 90s. 28 years since then senator biden presided over briar s nomination. six years since former president obama announced now attorney general merrick garland to fill antonin scalia s seat. that didn t work out. 1,239 days since one of the most heated confirmation hearings i
february and that the nominee will be a black woman. the person i will nominate will be someone of extraordinary qualifications, character, experience, and integrity. that person will be the first black woman ever nominated to the united states supreme court. it s long overdue, in my view. i made that commitment during the campaign for president, and i will keep that. in the end, i will nominate a historic candidate, someone who s worthy of justice breyer s legacy and someone, who like justice breyer, will provide incredible service on the united states supreme court. breyer s announcement today takes his relationship with the president full circle in a way. then senator biden presided over breyer s confirmation hearings in 1994. let s go now to cnn white house correspondent m.j. lee. the president, he made it clear he s not chosen his nominee to the court yet. so, what happens now? reporter: that s right. though it is clear that the search has already begun, choosing a
speak with ukrainian president zelensky last hour as tensions along the border persist. a source has told cnn zelensky is expected to tell president biden he s concerned about the rhetoric from the u.s. and other allies about the situation in his country. the united states reportedly made no concessions to russia in its written responses to the kremlin s security demands, and the russian foreign minister said there is, quote, no positive reaction, end quote, because it fails to address his government s main concern. sam kiley is in kyiv for us. do we know any more about this call from the ukrainians? reporter: well, no, we don t know any detail yet. we haven t had a readout from that call. there are indications of what the substance of it it would be, as victor was saying about some of the rhetoric. now we unpick how president zelensky has been reacting to some of the statements made by the united states and others, particularly the united kingdom over the last couple of
