On this day in 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor as a gift of friendship from the people of France. It was met with great fanfare, despite having been shipped in more than 200 cases and in hundreds of individual pieces. In the months that followed, its pedestal was completed and it was reassembled, and the Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated on Oct. 28, 1886.
