Migraine and PTSD: Knowing the Risk and Relationship

Distressing flashbacks, negative thoughts, guilt, and self-destructive behavior can all be symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a psychiatric condition that affects approximately 3.5 percent of U.S. adults every year; an estimated 1 in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime, according to the American Psychiatric Association.
There is a relationship between PTSD and migraine and headache, according to Natalia Murinova, MD, the director of the UW Medicine Headache Center and an associate professor of neurology at UW Medicine in Seattle.
“If you have PTSD, you’re likely to have headaches, but the majority of people with headaches don’t have PTSD,” Dr. Murinova explains. ....
