ANN ARBOR, MI Ann Arbor City Council Member Jeff Hayner has been removed from several city boards, commissions and committees for using a quote on social media attacking journalists with a homophobic slur.
“Such derogatory language is harmful to the LGBTQ community,” council stated in a resolution Tuesday morning, April 20, condemning Hayner’s remarks and recommending he attend anti-discrimination, diversity and sensitivity training. ....

ANN ARBOR, MI Amid the financial hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ann Arbor is instituting new poverty guidelines to allow more low-income residents to seek exemptions from property taxes.
City Council voted unanimously this week to approve the 2021 tax exemption guidelines, setting new income limits at 2.2 times federal poverty levels, and raising the personal asset limit from $25,000 to $50,000. ....

ANN ARBOR, MI Short-term rental property owners and investors in Ann Arbor may sue the city if a pending ban on their businesses isn’t lifted by City Council.
There’s a group of about 50 local residents who each own maybe one or two or three properties that, for a considerable time, they’ve legally operated as Airbnbs, said group member Heidi Poscher, co-owner of real estate development company Prentice Partners of Ann Arbor. ....

ANN ARBOR, MI Ann Arbor officials are considering a ban on police use of a facial-recognition technology.
The issue came up this week as City Council reconsidered its recent approval of a $348,308 contract for new dashboard cameras for Ann Arbor Police Department vehicles.
Even though facial-recognition technology is not part of the contract and Police Chief Michael Cox said AAPD doesn’t use it, Linh Song, a council liaison to the city’s police oversight commission, said she brought the contract back for reconsideration Monday night, Jan. 4, to have a public discussion about it and address concerns. ....
