Nonetheless, vendors and organizers were pleased with the turnout. About an hour before the first Downtown Lawrence Farmers’ Market of the year wrapped up, Roger Gipson had no products left to offer shoppers on a chilly, rainy Saturday morning. “We’re sold out,” he said as he stood under the Firefly Farm booth’s awning to escape the light rain. He was running the booth for his son, JT Hamilton Slate, and the lilacs and potted plants from Gipson’s North Lawrence home and Slate’s fields south of Clinton Lake had been quickly snatched up by shoppers on the market’s opening day. ....

Almost two months after a weekend shooting in rural Douglas County resulted in the deaths of two Lawrence men, the case remains open despite no charges having been filed, a law enforcement official told the Journal-World. Deputy Charlie Cooper, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said Wednesday that the Feb. 13 shooting was still under investigation. She said the sheriff’s office was still waiting for forensic evidence to be analyzed. Cooper did not respond to the Journal-World’s request for an estimate of how long the analysis would likely take. ....

Updated at 3:52 p.m. Friday A 21-year-old Lawrence man is facing a charge of attempted murder after driving a vehicle with a passenger into Lone Star Lake Thursday evening. Jeremy S. Williams, who made his first appearance in Douglas County District Court from the county jail Friday afternoon, was formally charged with second-degree attempted murder, a level-three felony. Judge James George said that depending on Williams’ criminal history a conviction could result in up to 247 months in prison, which is about 20.5 years. District Attorney Suzanne Valdez, who was in court for the prosecution, told the judge that the court’s pretrial services attempted to determine whether Williams was suitable for release from custody, but he would not cooperate. She said the prosecution believed Williams posed a threat to community safety because of mental health concerns. She also said the passenger in the car was Williams’ mother. ....
