Three Douglas County Sheriff’s Office vehicles were vandalized with graffiti late last week.
The sheriff’s office said in a social media post that the vehicles were marked with graffiti overnight between Thursday and Friday while parked at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, 1199 New Hampshire St. Images the office shared of the incident showed vehicles with the word “pig” marked on doors and windows.
Officials for the office did not respond to the Journal-World’s request for more information Monday.
The office asked anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers, 785-843-8477, or the office’s nonemergency line, 785-843-0250. ....

Three Lawrence men involved in a double fatality shooting in rural Douglas County over the weekend have been identified by local law enforcement.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Jennifer Hethcoat said Ramon V. Muhammad, 51, died at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds, and Austin J. Crystal, 31, died at the hospital from apparent gunshot wounds. The third man in the shooting, Ronald W. Crystal, 58, who was injured from apparent gunshot wounds, is currently in stable condition at a hospital, Hethcoat said. ....

This winter’s frigid temperatures made an impression on Sophie Bracker-Sturm while riding her bike more than six miles to her job at Sunflower Outdoor and Bike Shop in recent weeks. So when she heard of the extended cold spell about to settle over the Lawrence area, her mind turned to homeless members of the community.
“After hearing the forecast, I saw it was going to be pretty cold,” she said. “I talked to mom about doing something. I hate riding my bike in freezing conditions. I can’t imagine sleeping in it.” ....
