Mitt Romney gets a warm welcome. Or at least, as warm as he could possibly hope for thousands of people booing at him. Mitt was speaking at a Utah Republican convention, and he brought up Trump’s “character issues,” which prompted the crowd to get hostile. Some called him a “communist,” which … you know what, I’m not going to try to understand it, I’m just going to enjoy it.
Two injured in a Tukwila mall shooting. Police have not released any details about suspects, and say it was an “isolated incident.” Uh huh, sure also this weekend, three people were injured in a mass shooting in Saint Paul; four injured in a mass shooting in Delaware; two were killed and four injured in New Orleans; one killed and four injured in New Rochelle; one killed and three injured in Atlanta; five injured in Massachusetts; and on ....

Slog AM: Trump's CPAC Speech, Minimum Wage Hike Feels Like It'll Never Happen, Did Jodie Foster Wear Pajamas for the Golden Globes?

Get used to starvation wages. It’s looking less likely by the day that Democrats will manage to nudge up the minimum wage. They’re close to abandoning a plan to penalize employers who don’t pay their workers enough to survive, and they’re pretending that a non-binding recommendation from the Senate Parliamentarian is preventing them from implementing $15/hour in the next COVID relief bill. If there s any good news, it s that Elizabeth Warren is proposing a tax on people worth over $50 million. But her proposal doesn t go as far as it should, which is requiring that millionaires be put in a machine that presses them with a giant boot, causing them to flatten and then stretch extra-tall while making a sound like an accordion. ....

Slog AM: People Are Still Flying for Some Reason, Texas Still Lacks Clean Water, Muppets Are on Disney+ ... Partially

Yes, yes, we ALL miss airports right now, but just stay home. izusek / getty images
Why are people flying right now??? An engine on a Boeing 777 failed spectacularly after take-off in Denver, dropping large pieces on the neighborhood below. The plane was able to land safely and miraculously there were no injuries. So that’s a happy ending to the story, unless you’re a Boeing executive. Can this please be interpreted as a divine reminder not to travel for just a few more months?

The cold weather means the fish are just that much fresher. Matt Baume
So THAT’S what snow is. What a perfect weekend that was: A charming transformation of our lovely city into a serenely blanketed playground. And how tedious it would be if we had any more snow than that! Expect temperatures to warm for the next few days, bringing rain that will rapidly wipe away any trace of winter. It’ll be like it never happened, aside from the bruises you acquired from slipping on the sidewalk of that one property owner who never shovels. Beware of icy roads for the next few days, particularly if you must drive at night. And thanks to everyone who tweeted their pics & video at me I’ll have a roundup a little later today. ....

Transition to Biden
“Biden confronts the limits of his executive power” [Politico]. “It’s an elaborately planned slate of actions designed to highlight his efforts to shore up the struggling economy while Congress debates whether to pass the $1.9 trillion rescue package he has laid out. But while the executive actions will have a big impact millions of Americans are behind on their rent and mortgage payments, and tens of millions more hold student loan debt it’s clear that their effect on the broader economy will be limited at best. ‘It’s on the margins,’ said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton. ‘It needs to be more than ....
