AUBREY SECHRIST JERSEY SHORE The Jersey Shore Lions’ Club Citizen of the Month for May is Aubrey Blanche Sechrist, daughter of Tiffany and Mark Sechrist of Cogan Station. Aubrey’s activities include the following: National Honor Society, Cross Country, one year; National English Honor Society, three years; soccer, track and field, Outdoor Club, Key Club, four years. Aubrey has served as the captain of the varsity girls’ soccer team during her senior year of high school. Outside of school, Aubrey is involved with volunteering as a travel referee for soccer games. She has helped to teach vacation Bible school, helped to paint the pawprints outside of the high school building, and helped with setting up and running fundraisers with the Key Club. She also works part-time at the Gamble Farm Inn.

mmaroney@sungazette.com A veteran Williamsport Bureau of Police lieutentant claims in a federal lawsuit that he was passed over for promotions because he filed complaints on behalf of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 29 against anti-union activity. Lt. Steven Helm, supervisor of daywatch, this week asserted in the complaint in U.S. Middle District Court his rights to free speech were violated. The lawsuit identified Mayor Derek Slaughter, former Mayor Gabriel J. Campana and the City of Williamsport as defendants. Slaughter, who returned a telephone call for comment, said any statements regarding the lawsuit would need to come from J. David Smith or Austin White, the city solicitors and firm of McCormick Law.

Finance committee sides against proposed police contract | News, Sports, Jobs

mmaroney@sungazette.com In a clear sign of challenging economic times, two of three members of City Council’s finance committee sent a strong message to the city Bureau of Police and its Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 29 union Tuesday, giving a proposed four-year police collective bargaining contract negative recommendations. Councilman Adam Yoder and Councilwoman Bonnie Katz, both Republicans, voiced concern about the contract proposal to increase salaries for the unionized officers that Mayor Derek Slaughter and Chief Damon R. Hagan negotiated. Councilwoman Liz Miele, committee chairwoman, said she would favor a positive recommendation and voted against the negative recommendation.
