Province out of options in decades-old Ikamva legal battle

A high court bid by three Eastern Cape government departments to have two decade-old judgments rescinded has failed leaving them on the hook for a R41m damages award to architectural firm Ikamva plus an estimated R110m in interest. The legal circus has dragged on for more than 16 years since the provincial departments of public works and health bungled the awarding of the 2003 architectural contract for the upgrade of Frere Hospital.

Appeal court reinstates Makhanda man's rape conviction

Fingo Village, Makhanda, rapist Loyiso Coko has had his conviction for the 2018 rape of a 21-year-old woman confirmed by the Supreme Court of Appeal, which found that consensual foreplay did not imply the woman consented to sexual penetration. The SCA found that judge Nyameko Gqamana and acting judge Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, sitting in the Makhanda high court, committed an error in law when they overturned Coko’s conviction by the town’s regional court.
