Visiting specialists restore dignity to children

Two of SA’s top paediatric surgeons were at Frere Hospital last week to repair complex congenital defects in children and infants, at the invitation of the Eyabantwana Children’s Trust. Tarryn Gabler and Giulia Brisighelli spent between six to eight hours each day in surgery for eight patients on Thursday and Friday, while teaching young doctors at Frere new surgical methods as a part of an academic exchange.

Province out of options in decades-old Ikamva legal battle

A high court bid by three Eastern Cape government departments to have two decade-old judgments rescinded has failed leaving them on the hook for a R41m damages award to architectural firm Ikamva plus an estimated R110m in interest. The legal circus has dragged on for more than 16 years since the provincial departments of public works and health bungled the awarding of the 2003 architectural contract for the upgrade of Frere Hospital.
