An Eastern Cape HIV-positive serial rapist has been sentenced to eight life terms for raping eight young women, four of them schoolgirls. He was also convicted of seven counts of attempted murder after he raped seven of the women without using a condom when he knew he was HIV-positive. Mthatha high court judge Buyiswa Majiki sentenced the 34-year-old father to: • Eight life terms for eight counts of rape; • Five years for each of the eight counts of kidnapping; • Eight years for each.
A high court bid by three Eastern Cape government departments to have two decade-old judgments rescinded has failed leaving them on the hook for a R41m damages award to architectural firm Ikamva plus an estimated R110m in interest.
