The local train service in Mumbai was open for limited hours for the general public before the onslaught of the second wave.
However, in the wake of the second COVID-19 wave, the local trains in Mumbai were closed for the general public. Later, on June 21, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Vijay Wadettiwar had said that the general public won t be able to commute in Mumbai local trains till the pandemic is over.
However, the demands for opening the local train service have been raised by Mumbaikars. Now, Maharashtra BJP leader Pravin Darekar on Sunday said the saffron party will launch protests if the state government doesn t allow people who have taken two doses of COVID-19 vaccine to travel by suburban trains in Mumbai.
Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Vijay Wadettiwar on Monday said that the local trains of Mumbai might not open their doors for the general public for another 15 days as a precautionary measure against COVID-19.

The Ministry of Railways on Thursday allowed passengers of long-distance trains to travel in suburban local trains in Mumbai.
According to an official release shared by the
Central Railways, passengers who have a valid and confirmed ticket for any outstation train are allowed to buy a non-return local train ticket and travel by local train to the boarding point from anywhere in the city and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region from six hours prior to the time of departure of the train on that particular day.
