VW independent/submitted information Van Wert City Schools, in correlation with Ohio Revised Code 3313.64 or 3313.65, will again permit students from other school districts in Ohio to apply and enroll in the district’s school system through “open enrollment” for the 2021-2022 school year. Applications will be accepted beginning immediately on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the date the application is received by the superintendent of Van Wert City Schools. Applications must be completed and returned no later than June 1. Interested individuals may stop by the Superintendent’s Office in the S.F. Goedde Building, 205 W. DAVE MOSIER/ independent editor Eight people were arraigned on grand jury indictments this week in Van Wert County Common Pleas Court. Karl Kahler Jr., 59, of Lima, pleaded not guilty to one count each of robbery and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer (fleeing), each a felony of the third degree; grand theft, a felony of the fourth degree; and theft, a fifth-degree felony. A $100,000 cash bond was set in the case and Kahler will appear for a pretrial conference at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 24. Christopher Caldwell, 32, of Van Wert, entered not guilty pleas to one count each of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer (fleeing), a felony of the third degree; and obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony offense. A $25,000 cash bond was set in the case and Caldwell will appear for a pretrial conference at 8:30 p.m Thursday, March 25. ....
Van Wert independent Local businessman and former two-term Van Wert mayor Don Farmer died Tuesday at a Fort Wayne, Indiana, hospice center. He was 82. VW independent file photo Farmer, a Pennsylvania native, later moved to California, where he graduated from Fresno High School and earned a business degree from Los Angeles State College. He later moved to Van Wert, where he owned and operated Mac’s Delicatessen and The Paint Bucket, as well as PAVE Communications. Farmer served two non-consecutive four-year terms as mayor, from 2004-2007 and from 2012-2015. He also served several terms on Van Wert City Council, representing the First and Second Wards and as an at-large councilman. ....

MSVW map First off, Main Street Van Wert Executive Director Mitch Price made a presentation on the DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) program planned for the downtown area. The state program consists of a district within the downtown area where A and D alcohol permit holders can sell alcohol, by the cup, to patrons, who would be able to walk or dine within the boundaries set up by the program. DORA was first created in 2017 for communities with populations of fewer than 35,000 people and a maximum district size of 150 acres. ....
