Submitted information COLUMBUS The Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) reacted to the passage of House Bill (HB) 67 by the Ohio House of Representatives. The bill, which passed by a vote of 93-1 and advances to the Senate, would provide graduation flexibility and targeted testing waivers to students and schools for the 2020-21 school year, among other changes. However, because a vote on the bill’s emergency clause failed 57-38, the bill will not take effect until June, long after tests have been administered. For bills designated as emergency measures, the Ohio Constitution requires two-thirds support of the members of each chamber on the emergency clause. If an emergency clause is approved, the bill itself also requires a two-thirds majority vote to pass. ....

Spiritual Enrichment Director Brad Petrie has been hosting First and Third Tuesday Devotionals for seniors following SilverSneakers classes. In the month of March, Petrie will be hosting a free Healthy Living Class that will help seniors focus on their physical, emotional, and spiritual health. This four-week class runs every Tuesday from 11-11:45 a.m. in the Senior Fitness Room at the YMCA. The first class will take place March 2 and run through March 23. Classes are open to all members and non-members at no cost. ....
DAVE MOSIER/ independent editor One person was sentenced while four others appeared for criminal hearings during a light week in Van Wert County Common Pleas Court. Joshua Lesko, 32, of Ohio City, was sentenced to 150 days in jail on one count of violating a civil protection order, a felony of the fifth degree. Judge Martin Burchfield gave Lesko credit for 82 days already served. Also this week, Ashley McCarthy, 38, of Van Wert, changed her plea to guilty to one count each of aggravated possession of drugs and possession of heroin, each a felony of the fifth degree. Judge Burchfield ordered a presentence investigation and a drug court evaluation in the case and scheduled sentencing for 9 a.m. Thursday, April 15. ....
