Asphalt Will Be Used On Saline Creek Road, Not Chip & Seal

Saline Creek Road will be the next focus of the Ste. Genevieve County Commission, following completion of the Lawrenceton Cutoff/Roth Road project.
Commissioners agreed with road and bridge foreman Scott Schmieder’s suggestion that the 6/10 of a mile stretch will need regular asphalting. Because of a steep hill, often used by heavy trucks, chip and seal paving would probably not hold up long.
“If we chip and seal it a month later it will be peeling off,” Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson said.
The commissioners asked Schmieder’s opinion. He said asphalt was definitely his recommendation. ....

Heavy Use Of Rock Causing Budget Issue

Although the Lawrenceton Cutoff Road project, with its Highway Y and Roth Road (an extension of Lawrenceton Cutoff) intersection improvement has caused the county to exceed its allocated budget for prep rock, the Ste. Genevieve County Commission is not panicking.
The intersection itself took some 12,000 tons of rock.
“We never anticipated anything like that,” Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson said during last Thursday’s County Commission meeting. “We’re four months into the year and we’re already over budget on prep rock.”
He was quick to note, however, that “We’re not going to go broke.” ....

Commissioners, Likely Bidders Look At Roads

As winter melts into spring, road work is looming ahead for Ste. Genevieve Country road crews.
Road and bridge foreman Scott Schmieder shared a list of roads that need repair with the county commissioners during their meeting last Thursday.
He identified the following roads: French Village, Saline Creek, Dry Fork, Blum, Lawrenceton Cutoff, Straughn Road, Hager, Donze, Minnith, St. Mary Cemetery, Hart-Pinkston, and Burk’s Hill.
Many of them only have one or two spots. Blum Road has as many as 10 spots, Schmieder said, while French Village Road has four.
Schmieder estimated that it might take about a month to take care of all the fixes. ....

County Commissioners, Schmeider Brace For Winter Weather

With the first winter weather predicted for the county, Ste. Genevieve County commissioners wanted to make sure road and bridge foreman Scott Schmieder was prepared at last Thursday’s commission meeting.
Schmieder said his crews were already putting salt on hills and curves and would be ready for snow or ice over the weekend.
Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson asked if all the trucks were being kept under cover.
Schmieder said that while not all are inside enclosed strictures, they are all at least under cover. The agreed that ice getting in dump trucks already loaded with cinders or salt should be avoided. ....
