They kicked off this 24 hour labor action, that will not only target the airport, but also the port. Frank, and julie, its no coincidence why they are choosing now to walk off the job. This is after all, one of the busiest travel days of the year at Oakland Airport. While plenty of people are getting away for thanksgiving, Airport Union officials hope they get their message loud and clear. Board the vessel right now conducting interviews with the crew and just gathering as much data as possible. Reporter one of the things we heard yesterday is that visibility may have been a factor, it was reduced to maybe quarter of a mile. How do you look into that as a factor . We want to first determine what the visibility was. And of course the investigation will help with that. But that said, visibility as you know in the bay area here could always be a challenge. These vessels are pretty technically advanced with radar and navigation equipment. So much like you might land an airplane in reduced visibility, sometimes these vessels can travel in limited visibility as well. An ntsb investigation did determine that the bar pilot navigating the ship was impaired by prescription drugs. He spent ten months behind bars and had his pilot license revoked. One of the biggest factors in that accident was the weather. Thick fog blanketed the bay. Chief meteorologist jeff ranier is in the Weather Center with the conditions at the time of the incident. It was foggy at least interior. Was it like that on the water . We did definitely have plenty of low clouds, also fog. Weather, was this a prime factor in this . We cant say so far. There you can see the bay bridge in the center of your screen and that marker indicating that this collision again happening at tower 6 which is just off to the west of Treasure Island. Once again, at 11 120 this morning, visibility was a quarter mile or less. It was a long area of low clouds that straddled right across the bay bridge.
