Lansing police officer fired for sending racist message to coworkers

View Comments LANSING  A Lansing police officer has been fired for sending a racist message to several other officers, according to the chief.  Lansing Police Chief Daryl Green said the officer was fired after an internal affairs investigation. He did not name the officer. The administration does not tolerate discriminatory behavior, Green wrote in an emailed statement. The discipline is currently in dispute, any further comment would jeopardize the grievance process. Green said during Tuesday s Board of Police Commissioners meeting that he discussed the situation in detail with the board s complaint review committee, and they agreed with his decision to fire the officer.

City of Lansing disregards public records law, AG guidelines

LANSING   The Lansing City Attorney s Office is not complying with Attorney General guidelines and the Freedom of Information Act when fulfilling public records requests.  The city has extended FOIA response deadlines by not counting one day per week as a business day under FOIA because of citywide furloughs that have been in effect since January.  The FOI Act allows up to 15 business days for a public body to respond with either a written denial, the requested records or a request for a good faith deposit to begin processing the request.  Lansing has extended that to 18 business days, claiming the city s temporary four-day work weeks allow them to do so.
