consistent. he was authentic. he was honest. that resonated with a lot of people across the country. he had a great sense of humor. he considered entertainment to be probably the most important part of the success of his radio show. he connected with people. not with everyone. he had his critics to be sure. but he shocked a lot of people in establishment politics in the late 80s and early 90s. when they came to realize that there were legions of listeners to rush limbaugh who he called the ditto heads. there were folks out there that got him, who spoke his language and who felt that he was able to boil down how they felt and express it in a way that unified an i enormous part of america. so like a lot of people and a lot of people in this business, i had an opportunity to get to know rush over the years. he was very kind to me, very supportive of my career. we kept in touch over the years. i will miss him. i send my deepest condolences to his wife, katherine and his bro ....
can you give us a status update on where things stand this morning with this crisis? well, this morning i understand we have about 3 million people without power around the state of texas. we were at 5 million people at one point, i think. here in my city in austin about a third of the austin energy customers are without power. we re just not getting enough power from the state, from the grid. i m in a community right now that is not only cold, but it is also scared and frustrated and confused and angry and i share in that. the grid has failed us here. we need better answers from the state as to when the power generation is going to come back on. what i m hearing is that it could be that that doesn t happen until things thaw here and that could be another two or three days. which i think to many people they feel like that is an unacceptable timeline. i m going to get to in a second, mr. mayor, the issues of how this happened, but continuing with what s happening rig ....
cdc. this morning, vice president kamala harris pitched the administration s covid relief plan as the answer for ramping up vaccinations. she says, teachers should be a priority and move up in line. here is what she just told savannah guthrie about the urgency to get this passed and people vaccinated. sometimes you talk about hurricanes and what we need to do relief afterward. this hurricane is still raging. we still have people dying on a daily basis. we have got to address this. that s what the president and i and the american rescue plan is designed to address. an emergency that is occurring right now and is ongoing. we need to act and we need to act now. the race to vaccinate some communities is so urgent that one pastor of a black church in virginia is literally going door to door asking his members to get one. his church was slated to open its doors a few seconds ago. it s a place where people can get vaccinated with the help of county nurses. nbc s aaron gilc ....
